Garald Schmitz, 72, Minot, ND, died Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at Trinity Hospital in Minot.

Garald Ray Schmitz was born May 16, 1952, the son of Frank and Lorraine (Vanderberg) Schmitz, in Minot, North Dakota. He was raised and educated in Devils Lake and Salem.

He married Marilynn Arends in 1974 and they made their home in California. They were then blessed with one daughter, Olivia. Garald worked as a dietician, at Vandenberg Air Force Base for 13 years, before returning to Minot in 1987. He retired from civil service after 27 years, in 2000. He then began working at Market Place Foods, in the bakery for the next 10 years. Garald and Marilynn divorced in 2024.

He loved to go sight-seeing, fishing, hunting, and camping, especially camping on the beach with his daughter. He enjoyed spending time sitting outside on the deck at the firepit with his grandson and his friends. He liked to travel to different states for deaf conventions. He enjoyed going to car shows, and had his collection of vintage model cars. He always watched the Vikings on tv.

His loving family includes: daughter, Olivia (Patrick) Peterson; grandchildren, Curtis (Kayleigh) Griffey-Schmitz, Shelby Schmitz, Joshua Olson, Marshall (Tori) Peterson, Kari (Tyler) Peterson; sisters, Susan (Darrell) Francis, Mary Beth (Jeffery) Brooks; nieces and nephews, Joshua (Anne) Francis, Jason (Amy) Francis, Jeremy (Stacey) Francis, Brittany (Aaron) Ondo, Cody (Krista) Brooks, Chelsey (Aaron) Stevenson, and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, David Schmitz; nephew, Brent Francis.

Funeral: Tuesday, September 10, 2024, at 11:00 a.m., at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot. Visitation: Monday from 5 to 7 p.m., at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
