Marlene Pearl Hill

Marlene Pearl Hill, 83, Sioux Falls SD, formerly of the Minot area passed away peacefully March 7, 2024, in a Viborg SD Nursing Home.

Marlene was born January 27, 1941, in Westhope, ND, the daughter of Theodore and Velma (Feken) Ballantyne. She was raised on the family farm in Kuroki, ND and graduated from Westhope High School in 1959. Marlene was employed during her younger years at Minot State College in the Registrar’s office.

She was united in marriage to Curtis Hill on July 31, 1960, in Minot. They made their home in Minot where they raised their three children. During this time, she provided daycare and babysitting service.

In 1982, the family moved to Cando ND where she quickly made lifelong friends. In 1985, they returned to Minot. She then worked at John Moses Hospital in the housekeeping department and did housekeeping for various local families.

She was a former member of Augustana Lutheran Church in Minot. She taught Sunday School when her children were young, was a lifetime member of the PTA and did volunteer work at Edison School. She enjoyed sewing, reading, and doing crafts. She was an excellent cook and loved to bake. She always had fresh baked cookies, bars or caramel rolls coming out of the oven when the kids came home from school. She enjoyed traveling with Curtis and camping with her family. She and Curtis moved to Sioux Falls SD in 2021 to be near family.

Marlene’s family includes her loving husband of 63 years, Curtis; children: Roxanne (Bill) Fry of Castroville CA, Brent (Verinda) Hill of Sioux Falls SD and Craig Hill of Britton SD; grandchildren: Ryan (Abril) Fossen of Williston ND, Emily and Cante’ Hill of Bristol SD; great grandchildren: Avery and Helena Fossen of Williston ND; sister: Betty (Ralph) Adams of Independence, MO; in laws: Shirley Ballantyne of Shelby MT, Frances Ballantyne of Billings, MT; and Avis Mathis of Minot ND; numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Gladys and her husband Norman Nehring; brother, William and his wife Masa Ballantyne; brothers, Gerald Ballantyne, Robert Ballantyne and James Ballantyne. Also preceding her in death were her in laws Harold and Gertie Hill, Ralph Adams, Doris and Gordon Bunas, Duane and Olive Hill, and Jake Mathis.
