Pius Volk, 82, Surrey, ND, passed away Sunday, May 5, 2024 at Trinity Hospital.
Pius John Volk was born on September 3, 1941, the son of Kasmer L. and Frances (Brossart) Volk in Rugby, North Dakota. He was raised on a farm near Berwick, North Dakota. He worked for Buckingham Freight until he enlisted in the United States Navy and served until his honorable medical discharge.
In 1962, he married Lois Berg. They were blessed with four sons. They lived in Rugby and during that time he worked at Johnny Hilzendigger Pontiac and later became a Rugby City Police Officer.
Pius loved racing. He raced in Hobby Stock and Sprintcar on various tracks across ND and Canada, winning numerous events. A notable contribution he made to the sport was his involvement in the creation of the racetrack in Rugby, ND. In 2014, Pius was inducted into the Nodak Speedway Hall of Fame.
Pius married Elaine Brown and through that union he was blessed again with three daughters. He worked as a Vo Ag Teacher for Minot Public Schools, and to this day, fond stories of âMr. Volkã find their way back to his family. Pius later owned and operated George Miller Repair until his retirement in 2011. He possessed a wealth of knowledge and had a genuine passion for his craft.
In addition to being a gifted mechanic, he was a hardworking man. There was nothing he couldnát fix. After his retirement, he could be found fixing everyoneás golf carts while spending winterás in Apache Junction, AZ. He was a motorcycle enthusiast. He loved riding and attending the Sturgis Rally in SD. He was a seasoned billiards player and participated in the âOld Prosã league for many years. Pius loved the outdoors, including hunting, fishing, and watching Nascar. He was a huge animal lover, especially when it came to his hunting dogs.
Pius was a devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. He was incredibly wise, and he gave the best advice.
His loving family includes: His partner of 19 years, Amy Maurer; sons, Jeffrey (Lisa) Volk, Jerry (Charity) Volk, Rick (LeAnn) Volk, and Robert (Beverly) Volk; daughters, Dawn Volk, Melissa (Ron) Patten, and Michelle (Lane) Liebelt; siblings, Richard (Laura) Volk, Addie Berg, Raymond (Monica) Volk, Robert âBobã Volk, Beverly (John) Spink, Douglas (Glori Ann) Volk and Debra (Jay) Thorson; sister-in-law, Nancy Volk, and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Albert and George Volk; brother-in-law, Roger Berg; sister-in-law, Florence Jean Volk; nephew, Mario Volk; and his beloved pets.
Mass of Christian Burial: Tuesday, May 14, 2024, at 2:00 p.m., at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, Minot.
Interment: Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at 2:00 p.m., North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, ND.
Visitation: Monday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
Vigil Prayer Service: Monday at 7:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
