Dennis Torno, age 83 of Bottineau formerly of Kramer, passed away on Wednesday, May 15, 2024 at a Bottineau nursing home. His memorial service will be held on Friday, May 24, 2024 at 10:00 am at the Nero Funeral Home in Bottineau.
Dennis W. Torno, a son of John and Tillie (Brodehl) Torno, was born on April 25, 1941 in Bottineau. He graduated from Kramer High School in 1959. He furthered his education by attending UND where he graduated with a B.S. degree in Business Administration and Marketing in 1963. He was a member of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity and he also received his private Pilot License in 1960 and was active in the Civil Air Patrol. On July 20, 1963, Dennis was united in marriage to Carol Ann Anderson at the First Lutheran Church in Bottineau. They raised three children, Susan Lee, Brian John and Mark Owen.
Dennis was a well-known salesman; starting at J.C Penny’s in Minot in men’s clothing in 1964, Mason Shoe Co sales from 1955 to 1977, Farmers Union Central Exchange and J.C. Penny’s in St. Paul, MN in 1964 and 1965. Dennis was a Top Salesperson for the R.L. Polk and Co selling city directories from 1970 to 2004. On October 5, 1964 his father passed away and Dennis was called to take over the farming operation in 1965 and he continued to operate the farm for the next 50 years. His enthusiasm for farming, sales or being an accomplished pilot was contagious to all around him.
Dennis loved being a pilot of his own private plane, a Cessna 177 Cardinal II. It opened up a world to endless possibilities, traveling all across the US and Canada. Taking many family vacations and fishing trips. He made countless friends along the way. He was devastated when in 1990, he had to sell his plane and could no longer fly due to health issues.
Dennis and Carol loved to travel in the off season. They enjoyed many ocean cruises and traveling to their numerous timeshares. They loved all the people they met along the way. Dennis enjoyed hunting, fishing, farming and travel. He enjoyed visiting with family and friends and watching his grandchildren grow up around him. Dennis will be dearly missed by all who knew him. God bless him to regain his wings and fly to the heavens!
Dennis is survived by his wife of 60 years, Carol; daughter, Susan (Michael) Hamilton of Minot; sons, Brian (Brenda) Torno of Bottineau and Mark (Tressa) Torno of Garrison; six grandchildren, Joshua Torno, Jacob Torno, Alyssah Torno, Phillip Hamilton, Jordon Hamilton and Taryn Thorsell; brother, Kenneth (Marian) Torno of Cedar Rapids, IA; sister, Marlene (Don) Swenson of Aneta, ND; brothers-in-law, Lester Anderson of Elk River, MN and Marvin Anderson of Lisbon, ND.
