Charlotte Vaagen, 82, Fargo, ND passed away Monday, April 22, 2024 at Bethany Retirement Living on 42nd in Fargo.

Charlotte was born April 1, 1942, in Dayton, Washington, the daughter of Harry J. and Amy L. (Rayburn) Sutton. She moved with her parents and attended schools at various parts of the United States. She moved with her mother in the seventh grade and attended Carpio Public School. Charlotte received her GED in Minot in 1981.

She was once married to Donald Haaland whom she married in April 1958. She lived in California for a time and while there Charlotte did babysitting in her home, took in ironing for people, was a nurses aid and a telephone operator. She received her nurses aid certificate while in California.

Charlotte moved back to Carpio and married Earl Vaagen in Carpio on October 9, 1971. They made their home in Carpio and farmed until Earl’s death on January 12, 1979.

Charlotte owned and operated the Americana Motel & Cafe in Portal for three years before moving to Kenmare where she worked at the Senior Citizens Center, Meals on Wheels, Kenmare Laundry, and also helped her children with their paper routes.

Charlotte later moved to Minot where she babysat in her home for her granddaughter. Charlotte attended Carpio Lutheran Church, Church of the Nazarene in Kenmare, Southside Church of the Nazarene in Minot, and Hope Lutheran Church in Surrey until she was no longer able to attend church in person, after which she would watch church online.

She was preceded in death by her father, Harry Sutton; mother, Amy Furulie; stepfather, Alfred Furulie; stepmother, Cecelia Sutton; husband, Earl Vaagen; daughter, Dorene Turner; daughter-in-law, Rose Haaland; grandson, Kip Turner; great-granddaughter, Ariya House; brother, Ronald Wright; sisters, Patricia Snyder, Shirley Murphy, Cathy Rach; stepbrothers, Jack Bass and Bob Bass; stepsister, Betty Vaagen; and numerous brothers and sisters-in-law.

Funeral: Friday, April 26, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at Carpio Lutheran Church, Carpio.

Interment: Nazareth Lutheran Cemetery, rural Carpio, ND.

Visitation: Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Family Prayer Service: Thursday at 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
