Marion Hambek

Sept. 27, 1944-Feb. 3, 2024

Minot

Marion Kay Hambek, 79, Minot, ND, passed away Saturday, February 3, 2024, in Trinity Hospital of Minot.

Marion Kay Kozachenko was born September 27, 1944, the daughter of Edward and Ruth (Annell) Kozachenko, in Minot, North Dakota. She graduated from Minot High School in 1962.

Marion married Edward Alan Hambek on March 22, 1963, in Minot. They made their home in the Minot area where they raised their four children. Marion helped Edward with his carpet-laying business until his illness forced him to retire in 1981. She was hardworking and committed herself to a variety of jobs over the years, but happily retired when she was done working.

Her most treasured roles were mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Marion was a loving and supportive mother and enjoyed watching her grandchildren grow. They will always remember how silly and fun she was.

Marion was a fierce competitor on the softball field for the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home in her younger years and contributed to the team winning multiple tournaments. Marion’s competitive side would also show in the card games she loved to play. Her friends and family will tell you she always made sure to clarify the rules that were in her favor.

Her recipe box is neatly organized and filled with several well-loved recipes, including her famous peanut brittle. Marion was an avid reader with a worn-out library card. Her love of reading was evident from the stack of books she kept by her chair and the many books she read to all the little ones in her life. She enjoyed watching the home shopping network and we have the proof! Mom enjoyed music and loved the tenor singers, her favorite being Luciano Pavarotti.

Marion had a talent for yarn work and she crocheted and knitted many things: scarves, hats, blankets, and mittens, which weren’t very warm in the ’70s! Marion gifted many of her crocheted beanies to premature babies at local hospitals and every member of the family has at least one “Kozy” afghan blanket.

Her loving family includes:

children, Tammie Hambek, Minot; Quince Hambek, Devils Lake; Mark Hambek, Minot; and Paula Hambek, Rapid City, South Dakota; grandchildren: Tyler Hambek; Kylee (Rob) Roney and their children Rylee, Ryland, and Raegan; Samantha (Josh) Stenvold and their children Kallyn and Quinn; Tanner (Anna) Hambek and their children Blake, Leighton and Crew; Crystal (Travis) Payne and their child TJ; Rylen Penn; brothers, Alvin (Linda) Kozachenko and Jerry Kozachenko and sisters, Cheri Gales and Donna (Jerry) Woodcox.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Edward in 1986, mother and father-in-law Edward and Edith (Mork) Kozachenko, and sister Joyce Hayba.
