John Watland

John Merwyn Watland, 88, of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 22, 2024, at Ecumen – Detroit Lakes.

John was born in Knox, North Dakota April 1st, 1935 and grew up on the family farm. He attended school in a one-room schoolhouse in Benson County through the 8th grade and then began working on the family farm. Enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1954. Following his service, he married Joan Wicks in 1956 and began a life together that took them from North Dakota to Montana and finally to Detroit Lakes. John worked as a mechanic for over three decades before transitioning to well drilling later in his career. Known for his love of fishing, hunting and cherished moments spent with his grandchildren. He was always ready for a friendly chat over a cup of coffee or tea. His passion for cards and conversation always filled his kitchen with warmth and laughter. John is survived by his children; John (Pat) Watland; Jim (Marsha) Watland; Jeff (Jodi) Watland; Jean Watland. He is also survived by his sister Carol Hoosier; 9 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Joan in 2017, and sisters, Arlene Thompson and Janice Helgeson.

John’s memorial service will take place at 11:00 am at Lakes Area Vineyard Church, 950 Longview Dr. Detroit Lakes, MN 56501 with a visitation one hour prior and luncheon to follow.

Interment will take place in Knox, ND.
