Hampstead, NC

Jane Coale Shaar passed away peacefully on March 5, 2024 at the age of 84. She was born on July 29, 1939 to Jane Coale and Harry Thomas Huber in Philadelphia, PA. She graduated from West Chester State College in 1961 with a Bachelor’s degree in Education. She went on to study art at the Rhode Island School of Design and received a degree in art at Shippensburg University.

Art, education and children were her passion. She taught first grade for several years in Marquette, Michigan and continued to teach art throughout her life. She was an accomplished painter, printmaker, photographer; and participated and headlined in many art shows.

Jane married H. Erik Shaar in 1963; they were married for 59 years. During that time they had two daughters, many collies and lived in Michigan, Pennsylvania, North Dakota and retired in North Carolina. They travelled the United States and Europe.

Upon arriving in North Carolina, Jane became actively involved with the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center. She volunteered in all aspects; searching for nests, watching for hatchlings and working in the hospital. She also chaired a fundraiser where local artists painted plaster turtles which are displayed all over the Topsail area.

Jane was creative, imaginative, a great tennis player and cook. She is survived by her brother John Huber, her daughters Gretchen Shaar-Hagwood (R. Bruce Hagwood) and Rachel Roach (Sean Roach); her grandchildren Jarrett and Jeremy Hagwood, and Jordyn, Shane, Skylar and Kaleb Roach; and five great grandchildren.
