Alvin Von Holen

Alvin Von Holen went to his heavenly home on Saturday, January 20, 2024 after a courageous battle against cancer.

Alvin was born on December 28, 1936 to Oluf and Anna (Pederson) Holen at their home in Upham, ND. He was the youngest of seven children. Alvin enlisted in the United States Navy. He proudly served his country for four years.

He married Dorthy Pfau in October 1959. They were blessed with four sons, Keith, Kirby, Kerry, and Kyle. Alvin worked construction building roads from 1959 – 1965. He then purchased a farm near Upham. He continued construction and farmed on the weekends.

On August 20, 2005, Alvin married Carol Carlson. They made their home in Minot. Alvin continued to farm in Upham until his retirement. When Alvin married Carol, he became “Grandpa” to her 20 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He handled the chaos of the enormous Carlson family with a smile, lots of hugs, and patience.

He was a member of the Deep River Lutheran Church in Upham and later joined Immanuel Baptist Church in Minot. He enjoyed the Rice Lake Cabin and his lake neighbors. He would never turn down an opportunity to be “Captain Alvin” and give rides on his pontoon. Another passion of Alvin’s was to buy old cars and fix them up.

Alvin is survived by: Carol, his wife of 18 years; children, Keith Holen, Kirby (Deanna) Holen, Kerry Holen, and Kyle (Michelle) Holen; step-children, Christy (Brian) Nelson, Lisa (Mike) Zorn, Sharla (Michael) Braun, Carrie (Jason) Bennett, John (Nicole) Carlson, and Matthew Carlson; 12 Holen grandchildren, Crystal Holen, Madison Holen, Taylor (David) Allen, Lacey (Cody) Kreft, Whitney Holen, Tory (Erin) Holen, Denby (Jem) Holen, Kody (Courtney) Holen, Nathaniel (Taylor) Fields, Samara Holen, Loren Lundy, and Larry Lundy; 6 Holen great-grandchildren, Karter Kreft, Karson Kreft, Kayley Kreft, Shalie Holen, Wrenleigh Fields, and Haizlyn Fields; 20 Carlson grandchildren, Brendan (Loni) Nelson, Jeremy Nelson, Olivia Nelson, Austin (Kelsey) Zorn, Christopher Zorn, Lexie Zorn, Kaylen (Victor) Barstad, Kendal Braun, Kadyn Braun, Easton Bennett, Jayda Bennett, Presley Bennett, Braxtyn Bennett, Tessa Carlson, Daxton Carlson, Cassidy Carlson, Colton Carlson, Lincoln Carlson, Ashton Carlson, and Cruz Carlson; 5 Carlson great-grandchildren, Blake Nelson, Owen Zorn, Maddyn Zorn, and Roux Zorn, Rhen Fleck. and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oluf and Anna Holen; five brothers and one sister.

Funeral: Thursday, January 25, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Immanuel Baptist Church, Minot.

Interment: Will take place in the spring of 2024 in Bowbells, ND.
