Lowell Hanson

June 23, 1944-Nov. 6, 2023

Devils Lake

Lowell Gene Hanson was born to Gilbert and Eleanor (Farstad) Hanson in Dayton, Ohio on June 23, 1944, and left this earth early on November 6, 2023, in Devils Lake, ND.

He was born in Dayton because his father, Gilbert was an inspector of airplane engines during WWII. After the war, the family returned to ND, residing briefly in Carpio before moving to Powers Lake, then Battleview and finally to Minot when he was fourteen years old.

Following high school graduation, Lowell attended Minot State and Wahpeton School of Science. His entire professional career centered around construction with the majority on large projects including airport hangars, runways and finally, years building dams for the Corps of Engineers. Among many sites, work took him to the Mississippi River, Lake Darling, the Red River, and Devils Lake.

Lowell married Joyce Lacey on September 7, 1971. In 1976 they built their wonderful home with dad/Gib’s help in Minot and raised their children Julie and Luke.

Lowell’s love with the automobile began at an early age and remained until his death. Over the last twenty plus years, Lowell lived in Devils Lake making daily trips to his automotive body shop while sharing life with Carol Hjelmstad. He and his close friend Chris Tunheim from Fargo, partnered on restoring and customizing numerous show quality vehicles including Lowell’s original 1966 Chevelle Super Sport. They also won the ND Street Rod of the year in 2020 with a1951 GMC pickup.

Lowell will be missed greatly, but our Lord calls us home when it is time, and we sorrowfully accept His call. Lowell was a devout Christian, and he is at peace.

Lowell leaves behind his former wife, Joyce Hanson, daughter Julie (Scott) Ladner and their children Ally and Mandy; son Luke Hanson and his daughters, Laycee and Danni all of Minot ND, along with his companion Carol, brothers Mick (Sharon) Hanson and Duane (Darlene) Hanson, sister-in-law Sheila Hanson and numerous nieces and nephews. Many of these family members celebrated a wonderful Gib/Eleanor family reunion this past summer. He was preceded in death by his parents Gilbert and Eleanor Hanson and younger brother Keith.

Services will be held in Devils Lake at the Gilbertson Funeral Home on Friday, November 10, 2023, at 2:30 p.m. Coffee and refreshments will be served at the Elks following the service. Burial will occur at a future date in the Norman Free Lutheran Cemetery, rural Tiogo, ND

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Humane Society, or the charity of your choice.
