Walter Raymond Behrens, 97, Minot, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, August 14, 2023, in a Velva care facility.
Walter R. Behrens was born August 15, 1926, to John and Anna (Hoppman) Behrens on the family farm near Deering, North Dakota. After high school he joined the Navy and served as a quartermaster on a destroyer in the Pacific during World War II. After the war he married Helen Frances Shong on January 1, 1947. They had a small farm in the Deering area until they moved to continue dairy farming in the Minot/Burlington area. Besides dairy and farming he was the Assistant Manager at the Minot International Airport for 28 years. When he had free time, he was busy inventing. He had several patents and won many awards for his inventions. His favorite pastime was flying his Piper Cub and he also enjoyed fishing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Anna Behrens, his brother, Harry Behrens and his wife, Helen (Shong) Behrens.
His loving family includes his sister, Dorothy Offermann, Minot; his children, Peggy Austin, Sweet Home, Or, Barbara (John) Van Grinsven, Minot, Jeffrey (Connie) Behrens, Minot, Jennifer Behrens, Sweet Home, OR, Bernadine (Wes) Geiger, Garrison, and Pamela (Illand) Mariner, Minot; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law, along with several nieces and nephews also survive.
Visitation: Monday, August 21, 2023, from 5- 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home,
Funeral Service: Tuesday, August 22, 2023, 11 a.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran, Minot.
Graveside service with military honors: Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Gardens
In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate memorials be designated for the Dakota Territorial Aviation Museum in Minot where his Piper Cub is on display.
