Merton Johnson, 85, Minot, ND, passed away Sunday, March 26, 2023, in a Minot hospital.

Merton was born September 5, 1937, the son of Winfred and Olga (Opdahl) Johnson, in Westhope, ND. He was raised and educated in the Newburg area. Merton graduated from Newburg High School in 1956. After high school Merton drove gravel truck.

Merton enlisted in the United States Army in 1960. He was honorably discharged in 1962.

Merton married Linda Marsh on June 23, 1962 at Dovre Lutheran Church in Newburg. They made their home in Ryder for a short time while Merton worked on the missile sites. They eventually moved to Minot where he began working at Fairmont Foods and then Bridgeman working as a truck driver. He retired from Bridgeman Dairy in 1997 after 34 years of service.

He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and formerly Augustana Lutheran Church.

Merton enjoyed fishing, especially his trips up to Canada with his boys and his brother Wayne, camping, and wood work finishing.

His loving family includes: wife of 60 years, Linda

children, Mark Johnson, Minot, Darin (Michelle) Johnson, Jamestown,

grandchildren, Zachary (Ricca) Johnson, Watertown, SD, Tanner Johnson, Minot, ND

great-grandchild, Royer Merton Johnson

sister, Vi Seiffert, Westhope, ND and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Clarence Johnson, Glen Johnson, Wayne Johnson, and sister Judy Ballantyne.

Memorial Service: Saturday, April 1, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, Minot.

Interment: North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, ND in the spring of 2023.

Visitation: One hour prior to the service.

Memorials: in lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to Christ Lutheran Church.
