Dolores Schott was born on Aug 8, 1924 to Adolf and Martha (Krause)Schott, on the family farm in Byersville Township south of Butte, N.D., in McLean County. She was educated at the rural township schoolhouse, and then boarded out in Velva, N.D. to attend Velva High School graduating in 1942. She went on to attend College in Minot for a short time to receive her teaching credentials for rural one room schools during World War ll. She taught at several different township schools in the Butte and Mercer area.
Dolores married John Haugen on June 7, 1945 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Butte. This would be the first marriage ever performed inside the tiny local church, that would become the newly married couples house of worship throughout their seventy-four-and-a-half-year marriage. Dolores and John, made their home on the Haugen family farm just a mile and a half north of her birthplace. Together they raised eight children on the small grain and dairy farm. She was an expert cook, baker, gardener, canner, freezer and all-around homemaker. A necessity when raising such a large family!
Upon their retirement in 1985, Dolores and John moved to a small house on the west side of Butte with many vacant lots to continue gardening and entertaining their many family and lifelong friends. Their door was always open to visitors, which they cherished!
Dolores loved her Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. That faith was passed on to her large family through her quiet nonjudgmental attitude. She always chose to see the brighter side in every situation. Her next love was for her beloved John and her eight children, twenty-nine grandchildren, seventy-four great grandchildren, and twelve great-great grandchildren.
She was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. For many decades Dolores played organ for Sunday services, she taught Sunday school, Bible school, was a member of the Lutheran lady’s circle, all at St. Paul’s. She was a member of the local homemaker’s club, the Butte Senior Citizens, the Eagles in Harvey and the Moose in Minot. Dolores and John loved to waltz, two step, and polka.
She is survived by: Children, Dorathy (Larry) Schatz, James (Sandie) Haugen, Michael (Janice) Haugen, Patrick (Shelley) Haugen, Jerold (Marilyn) Haugen, Darlene (Gary) Letvin, Elaine (Ray) Carlson, and Daniel (Christal) Haugen.
