Sherain Olander

Sept. 14, 1942-Feb. 9, 2023

Minot

Sherain (Sheri) May Olander passed away Thursday February 9, 2023 at a Velva nursing home. She was born September 14, 1942 to George and Sena (Aaenson) Sartwell in San Francisco, California. The family later moved back to Minot, North Dakota where she was raised one of eight children; sister to Selmer, Sylvia, Shirley, Mona, Beverly, Allen and Linda. She attended Minot High School and was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church.

While working at The Keg, she met Arnie Olander. They were married April 2, 1960. Over their 60 year marriage, they enjoyed fishing and camping at the lake, pinochle, and most of all dancing. They raised three children- Gaylan, Terry and Rhonda. Sheri was the ultimate railroad wife, making Arnie’s lunches for every shift and taking roles as room mom, PTA president, scout leader and the unofficial neighborhood chauffeur. She also kept busy working odd jobs when someone needed the help.

Sheri was known for her knitting talent- creating the best dish rags, cutest baby sweaters and blankets. She was an avid bowler, loved word searches and reading, a long time member of TOPS and was always winning big at bingo. She may have cheered for the Twins and Vikings on TV, but in person she cheered for her kids and grandkids at as many events as she was able to attend. Even several of her great grandchildren were lucky enough to know her as Grandma O.

While her health declined over the last few years, her personality remained. She was sweet and sassy. She was tough and caring. She had the ability to be blunt, but made sure you knew she loved you. Coke Zero, game shows and nail polish are little things that will always remind us of her. She was an excellent wife, mom, sister, grandma and friend. We “Love ya!”.

As much as she will be missed, she will be remembered by her children: Gaylan (Chris) Olander, Terry (Sherry) Olander, Rhonda (Mark) Grindy, and Gay (Jeff) Just; grandchildren: Ashley (Michael) Evanoff, Kayla (Jered Kizima) Olander, Jace (Kadie) Olander, Wyatt (Erin) Grindy and Caleb (Adri) Gindy; great grandchildren: Henrik and Clark Evanoff, Kane, Petra, and Vada Kizima, Bennett and Gavin Grindy, Wayne Grindy and Adeline Olander, along with many close family and friends including sisters Shirley Olson, Linda Decoteau, and Beverly Beal-Peterson.

We are confident that her husband Arnie Olander met her in heaven with a two-step and spin. She was also greeted by her parents George and Sena Sartwell, in-laws: Alfred and Helen Olander, grandson: Levi Grindy, siblings: Selmer Sartwell, Allen Sartwell, Sylvia Pritchett and Mona Bouchard.

Our family would like to thank the nurses and staff at the Souris Valley Care Center in Velva for the incredible care they provided Sherain and the kindness they extended to us. You all went above and beyond during a very difficult time. We appreciate your knowledge and all that you did for Sherain and our family.
