Lorraine Ziegler

March 24, 1937-Feb. 23, 2023

Minot

Lorraine Jane Ziegler, 85, Minot, ND, went to her reward on Tuesday, February 23, 2023, at Trinity Hospital in Minot.

Lorraine Jane Wald was born on March 24th, 1937, to Joe and Anna Wald at St. Joseph’s hospital in Minot and was raised on the family farm between Surrey and Norwich where she developed her lifelong work ethic. Lorraine enjoyed sharing stories of the early years and chores with the Wald family milking cows, tending livestock and working in the fields. She went to school in Surrey for eleven years before completing her senior year at St. Leo’s. She then attended nursing school for a short while but, due to regulations at the time, had to choose between marriage or completing her training. Selfless giving of her time and talent for anyone in need never strayed from her heart of hearts.

Lorraine married Edward Philip Ziegler on June 12, 1956, at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church in Minot. They made their home in Minot for a time before moving to rural Balfour where they farmed and raised their three sons David, Dean, and Duane. They farmed until 1980, when they moved back to Minot. She continued to lovingly care for her family while finding time to volunteer at Our Lady of Grace Church and Trinity Homes in several capacities for decades. In her spare time Lorraine loved to crochet, spend time with Ed in their cabin at Parshall Bay, and visit family in their motor home. All the while she continued her devout practice of Catholicism and making sure her family was well fed and lovingly cared for.

She and Ed moved to Somerset Court in April of 2018 and found a wonderful sense of belonging in their new Somerset family which included both residents and staff. Ed passed away on February 28, 2019; she missed him deeply and kept his memory alive while continuing to be an amazing mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother to her appreciative family. Her resilience was inspiring. Despite the loss of her husband and most of her vision she found a way to enjoy her time at Somerset Court, where you could find her visiting with friends, walking the hallways (usually a few miles a day), or dancing a waltz if there was some music playing. No matter how difficult life became she always faced it with grace and a positive attitude. “There’s no use sitting around feeling sorry for yourself, time to get up and start moving” she would tell us. She faced her own passing the same way: with courage and poise, setting a perfect example for us one last time.

Her loving family includes her sons David (Kimberly) Ziegler, Dean (Nancy) Ziegler, Duane (Lisa) Ziegler; grandchildren: Eddie (Stephanie) Ziegler, Nick Ziegler, Justin Ziegler, Kristin Ziegler, Kelsey Ziegler, Logan Ziegler, Allison (Daniel) Klaver, Jordan Ziegler; great-grandchildren: Leo and Violet Ziegler; siblings: James (Helen) Wald, MaryAnn (Bob) Larson; brothers- and sisters-in-law: Elayne Wald, Katherine Ganje, Helen (Virgil) Frost, Henry (Patty) Ziegler, Virginia Ripplinger, Frances Ziegler, Judy Haglund; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
