June Springsted

June 25, 1931 – Feb. 4, 2023

Lignite

June Springsted, 91, Lignite, ND, passed away Saturday, February 4, 2023, at St. Luke’s Care Center in Crosby, ND, surrounded by her loving family.

June Marie Westphal was born June 25, 1931, the daughter of Rudolph and Bertha (Kindt) Westphal, in Minot, ND. She was raised on the Westphal family farm and educated in Velva, ND.

While in high school, June met Wendell “Springy” Springsted. Following Springy’s honorable discharge from the US Navy, he returned to Velva and they relocated to Portland, Oregon, where they married on June 26, 1948. While living in Portland, they raised their two daughters, Linda and JoAnn. June and Springy moved back to the Velva area in the summer of 1950, where they raised their young family with the addition of their sons, Jerry and Les. In 1951, June and Wendell relocated to Garrison. The following year, they moved to Columbus, ND, where they added two more daughters, Marsha, and Glenda. While living in Columbus, June cleaned houses for a few area families. In 1973, they relocated to Lignite, and June became the bookkeeper for their business, Springy’s Construction. They retired in 1988. Springy passed away December 25, 2009. Following her husband’s death, she continued to reside in Lignite. At one point her granddaughter Mia moved in and cared for her until it became difficult. In January 2022, she moved to Cody, WY, where she resided with her daughter and son-in-law, Bob, and Glenda, and at the Cody Long-term Care. On November 11, 2022, she moved back to ND and resided at the St. Luke’s Care Center, where she received excellent care. June felt very much at home and comfortable there with all the staff due to their attention and care given to her.

She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Lignite, where she was very involved with the quilting group and church activities. She was also a member of the Lignite American Legion Auxiliary Post #35 and a one-time local weight watchers’ group. She enjoyed doing ceramics, bowling, walking, crocheting Afghans, playing board games, playing Pinochle, and attending her grandchildren’s sporting events. She enjoyed playing some hot Pinocle games weekly at the Lignite Sr. Center. June had a large garden and she pickled anything possible. She had the best dill pickles (her grandchildren always wanted some for their birthday). She and Springy and some helpers had a systematic way of making the best sauerkraut. She was also a fabulous baker and cook and known for her caramel rolls, sugar cookies, chocolate cake and fried chicken. She could make something delicious out of nothing. She loved her flowers and plants, along with her companion, Sassy.

June was the rock and the glue of the family. She kept her family together and she worried about all generations of her family. She loved having her grand and great grandchildren close and will be sorely missed.

Her loving family includes: four daughters, Linda Bossert (Peter), Minot, JoAnn Bakken (Bob), Brooklyn Park, MN, Marsha Larson, Lignite, ND, Glenda Spencer (Bob), Cody, WY, daughter-in-law, Sonia Springsted of Oklahoma, ten grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great great-grandson and one great great-grandchild on the way. She also leaves behind her cat “Sassy.”

June was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wendell; two sons, Jerry and Les, son-in-law, Donald Blom; grandson, Justin Blom; 8 siblings, Bill, Lester, Roy, Anne, Esther, Lillian, Florence, and Jim.
