Dean Marmon

Jan. 20, 1942 – Feb. 20, 2023

New Town

Wayne “Dean” Marmon, 81, of New Town, ND, passed away on Monday, February 20, 2023 at the Trinity Hospital in Minot, ND.

Dean was born, January 20, 1942 to Fern (O’Cain) and Muller Marmon in Stanley, ND. He grew up on the Missouri River in Willams county before the Garrison Dam diversion. During his school years, the family moved to Mountrail County and Dean attended country school. He later attended Ross High School and finished his formal education with a GED obtained in Montana. Dean was a lifelong learner but not always through traditional means.

Dean held many different vocations throughout his life, first starting as a custom combiner working from North Dakota to Texas. When he wasn’t combining, he did odd jobs to pass the time. He eventually made his way back to North Dakota and then Montana to follow the love of his Life. Lou and Dean were married in Stanley ND on September 28,1963. They then moved to Montana and led a nomadic life for much of their early years together. He held jobs in sawmills, ranches, farms, Pepsi plant, shoe and saddle repair, and with search and rescue in Montana and Idaho. He owned his own boot and saddle repair shop in Post Falls, ID.

In 1977, he moved his family and boot and saddle repair business back to Stanley, ND. During this time, he was a part-time police officer and guarded the vault in the “new” Scandia American Bank before the walls were completed, and drove school bus for the Stanley school district, all while working on leather at his home shop. He was also an over-the-road truck driver for many years seeing most of the United States. He later became a security guard for the Hess gas plant in Tioga with Bis-Man security. Dean loved striking up a conversation with anyone around and enjoyed a cup of coffee quite often at Joyce’s or Northern Lights. Dean and Lou moved to rural New Town in 2003 and began semi-retired life. He once again was able to do what he enjoyed most and repaired many pairs of boots and saddles for the community. The coffee pot was always on for anyone to stop by for a good story and fresh pie.

Dean is survived by his wife, Lou Marmon; sons, Wayne (Brenda) and Duane (Ava) Marmon; daughter, Jessika (Mike) Froelich; brother, Linn Marmon; sister, Cristi Trulson; sister-in-law, Jean Marmon; grandchildren, Antonia Marmon, Sebastian Marmon, Tara Marmon, Aislynn Spokely, Samuel Cooper, Bailey Froelich, Robert Froelich, and James Cooper; great-grandchildren, Jay Spokely and Elliana Spokley.
