Ina Mae Gilbertson

May 31, 1928-Dec. 28, 2022

Ina Mae Gilbertson, 94, passed away Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at her assisted living home in Minot, ND.

Ina Mae was born May 31, 1928, the youngest of four siblings, to Gust and Edna (Glasoe) Roness in Noonan, ND. She spent her childhood years on the farm and went to a one-room country school through the 8th grade. She then went to stay in town with her sister and cousin so she could attend and graduate from Noonan High School in 1946.

Her first date with her one and only love, Leonard Gilbertson, was to a dance in Larson. They clicked from that day on and spent many hours talking and getting to know each other in the 1935 Ford that he was driving at the time. Her dad would turn on the porch light to let them know it was time for her to go in. They were married on Halloween, 1948, at Zion Lutheran Church where they had both been baptized and confirmed.

The first 14 years of their marriage they lived in Noonan, then moved to the country in 1962 where they farmed and raised their four children in Burke County. Sharon (Neil) Jenson, Gary (Becky) Gilbertson, Wendy (Terry) Brenno, and Ryan Gilbertson. The couple enjoyed doing many things together; bowling, snowmobiling, dancing, auctions, eating out, the Hostfest, grandkids, and traveling to Europe and many of the states. They relocated to Minot in 1999 to be closer to family and medical facilities. Leonard died in 2005 after 57 years of marriage. At 82 years of age. Ina Mae purchased a condo with her first oil royalties’ check and lived there for 10 years until she moved to Somerset Court.

Ina Mae lived a full and busy life with many hobbies and interests. She liked helping people who needed it, and was a modern grandma who e-mailed, texted, and facebooked with family and friends. Things she liked included watching the NDSU Bison and Vikings games, Dancing with the Stars on her big screen T.V., getting her nails and hair done, cold root beer, and homemade ice cream. The self-declared passion of her life was her art. Getting together with her painting friends in Columbus and then later at Vern Skaug’s house with other artists there was always the highlight of every week. Hundreds of her paintings in various mediums hang in the homes of relatives and friends all over the United States.

Some things that she did not like included racism or bigotry of any kind, male chauvinists, not being able to drive, going to the dentist, most vegetables and mayonnaise!

Her loving family includes: her four children; granddaughter, Chelsey (Josh) Arneson; grandsons, Kane (Carin) Souther, Chad and Cheyne Brenno, Brooke (Kirstie) Gilbertson and Alex (Carol) Gilbertson; 8 great-grandchildren, Breyson, Isla, Chance, Sydney, Sophia, Eli, Leo and Violet, will miss their Grandma Mae.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leonard; siblings, Ellen, Earl and Almer; two grandsons, Noah Gilbertson and Kris Souther.
