Gertrude Halvorson, 92, of Rock Lake, ND, passed away on Tuesday, January 3, 2023 at Maple Manor Care Center in Langdon, ND. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, January 18, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Rock Lake, ND with Fr. Jared Kadlec, celebrant. Visitation will be on Tuesday. January 17, 2023 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. with a 5:30 rosary at the Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home in Cando. Burial will be in the spring at the Rock Lake Community Cemetery.

Gertrude was born June 14, 1930 in Rock Lake, ND to William and Minnie (Robbins) Broderick. She was born at her great uncle and aunt William and Margaret O’Brien’s home. Her “Aunt Maggie” delivered her at that home. She attended all 12 years of school in Rock Lake and was the salutatorian of the class of 1948. Gertrude married Howard Halvorson on May 22, 1948. Following their marriage the couple moved to Calvin, ND. In 1954 the couple moved to rural Rock Lake and farmed until Howard’s death in 1993. Gertrude remained on the farm until recently when she moved to Maple Manor in Langdon, ND and lived until her death.

Gertrude had very strong Irish Pride!! St. Patrick’s Day was her favorite holiday. She was a wonderful cook and baker, made countless wedding cakes and cakes for other occasions. She was a homemaker, worked in Rock Lake at the theatre as a ticket taker and at the telephone office, Red Owl in Devils Lake and worked at Rolla Mercantile for many years, worked at Odegaard & Hunt grocery stores and the Hansboro Bar. She maintained a large garden up to 3 years ago, canned many pickles and other fruits and vegetables. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary all of her life. She was a charter member of Christian Mothers Society at IHM, church treasurer for many years and Towner County Farmers Union Leader for 23 years.

She is survived by her children Sharon Marie (Bob) Hauschulz, Monica Mardell (Jerry) Crane, Timothy Howard (Christie) and Dana Dawn (Rick) Scherr: 16 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren and another great-great-grandchild arriving in March. Also surviving are her 3 sisters Betty Moen, Marie Black and Janice (Ron) McKay and a brother Patrick Broderick.

Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband, daughter Kristine Jan, parents, infant brother Joseph, nephew Scott McKay, great-niece Gretchen Haberstroh, sister-in-law Audrey Broderick, and brothers-in-law Hans Moen and Leo Black. She was also preceded in death by several cousins.
