Dennis Gerald McCombs, 83, of Detroit Lakes, Minn., passed away on Saturday, January 7, 2023 surrounded by his family at Diamond Willow Assisted Living.
Dennis was born on February 12, 1939, the son of Kenneth and Evelyn Getzlaff McCombs (Kinyon) in Rugby, ND. He was raised by his grandmother, Anna McCombs in Towner, ND where he graduated High School.
He was enlisted in the US Army from 1959 to 1962. After, he returned to Towner where he met and married Ida Ann Schneibel on April 11, 1964.
Dennis had a passion for raising horses and spending time on the farm, but as his family got older, they quickly took precedence. Dennis was always so proud of his six children and family. He always tried to attend all of their sport activities as well as the ND State Class B Basketball tournaments from high school until he became sick. He enjoyed bowling and coaching softball as well.
He was a jack-of-all-trades, but a master as a Mechanic. Dennis could fix almost anything that needed repair.
He was the President of the Towner Alumni Association, Towner City Council, Towner Softball Association, and the Eagles Club. He achieved the Honorary Farmer Chapter for The Future Farmers of America.
Dennis is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ida, and their six children: Cary (Kristine) McCombs of Oak Grove, MN, Laurie (Leon) Senn of Detroit Lakes, Sheri (Doug) Bykonen of Champlin, MN, Lonnie (Judy) McCombs of Moorhead, MN, Jamie (Shane) Parsons of Bottineau, ND, and Andrew (Kelsey) McCombs of Detroit Lakes, 20 grandchildren: LaCarra (Tony) Larson, Lyn Senn, Zach Belland, Shelby (Jerry) Logan, Michael McCombs, Allison Jacobson, Sidney (Mitchell) Bykonen, Payton Bykonen, Taylor McCombs, Bailey McCombs, Charlie McCombs, Juliana Flores, Elijah Andel, London (Max) Andel, CaVanna Andel, Easton Andel, Gloriana Parsons, Addilyn McCombs, Jeter McCombs, Rossi McCombs, and 12 great grandchildren, brother, Kenneth (Ellen) McCombs of New Salem, ND, and many other nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his parents, grandchildren: James Belland and Lane McCombs, sister, Connie Ranning, brother, Garen Altman, and grandparents: Harold and Anna McCombs and Albert and Connie Getzlaff.
Visitation: 5PM – 7PM, Thursday, January 12, 2023 at West-Kjos Funeral Home.
Prayer Service: 7PM, Thursday, January 12, 2023 at West-Kjos Funeral Home.
Mass of Christian Burial: 12PM, Friday, January 13, 2023 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church with Father Chuck Huck to officiate.
Burial will be in the Spring at St. Cecilia’s Cemetery, Towner, ND.
Arrangements are in the care of West-Kjos Funeral Home.
