Eleanor Sime

Eleanor Sime, 91, Minot, ND, passed away Tuesday, November 15, 2022, at Edgewood Vista Memory Care in Minot.

Eleanor Regina Hoffart was born August 11, 1931, in Knox, ND. She was the 4th of 9 children born to Anton and Theresa (Klein) Hoffart, who were 100% German.

She was raised on a farm near Crary, ND. She attended school in Southam, ND. She worked for the ND School for the Deaf in Devils Lake, ND for 2 years as a young woman.

Eleanor married her high school sweetheart, Kenneth Lee Sime in Crary, ND on August 22, 1950 and celebrated 72 years of marriage in 2022. They received an apostolic blessing from Pope Francis in 2020 for their 70th anniversary.

Ken and Eleanor farmed the first few years of their marriage by Southam, Edmore and Crary, ND and then moved to Devils Lake, before moving to Minot in 1960.

Eleanor worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Minot Head Start program, Ward County Social Services, and The Knights of Columbus in Minot, all while raising 9 children.

She and Kenneth purchased a Red Owl store in Bowman ND in 1978. After several years with the Red Owl Franchise, they switched to a Super Value franchise and remained in business for 38 years. She and Kenneth sold the store in 2016 and retired at the age of 85. In September of 2020 they returned to Minot to reside at Edgewood Assisted Living.

Ken and Eleanor bought a cabin at Strawberry Lake in 1969, while still living in Minot. It was their favorite place to take their family. Many, many gatherings have been held there in the past 53 years.

Eleanor was a faithful member of St. Charles Catholic Church in Bowman, ND where she was a member of Catholic Daughters and many stewardship programs.

While living in Minot in the 60’s and 70’s, Ken and Eleanor were members of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church. In 2020, they rejoined the parish of Our Lady of Grace when they returned to Minot.

Eleanor is survived by her husband of 72 years, Kenneth of Minot; 9 children, Linda (Ronald) Stottlemyre, Charleston, SC, Audrey (Wayne) Marshall, Minot, ND, Sandra (Patrick) Butz, Minot, ND, Kenneth Sime, Surrey, ND, Sheldon Sime, Mandan ,ND, Stanley (Cathy) Sime, Bowman, ND, Jeffrey Sime, Grand Forks, ND, Ronald Sime, Bowman, ND, Sheila (Ronald) Palczewski, Spearfish, SD; brothers and sisters, Leo Hoffart, Devils Lake, ND, Dennis (Marion) Hoffart, Grand Forks, ND, Jerome (Mary) Hoffart, Devils Lake, ND, Sally Olson, Devils Lake, ND; sister-in-law, Nadine Hoffart, Grand Forks, ND; 15 grandchildren, Sean Stottlemyre, Carie (Jason) Moore, Dustin (Jill) Wald, Tiffany Butz, Erica Copeland, James Sime, Heather (Todd) Gefre, Courtney (Brandon) Gray, Ryan Sime, Danielle (David) Rodriquez, Austin Sime, Jade Sime, Shaylee Sime, Kayla Palczewski, Karly (Dawson) Schefter; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Irene Hoffart Wilhelmi and Delores Hoffart; brothers, Leonard Hoffart and Richard Hoffart; brothers-in-law, Francis Wilhelmi, Harold Olson and Harvey Sime; sisters-in-law, Mary Hoffart, Doris Hoffart, and Betty Minette; and granddaughter, Lisa Sime Sheehan.

Eleanor’s family is very grateful for the special care she received at Edgewood Vista Memory Care North. The staff, special CNAs, and Caring Edge Hospice were excellent caregivers to our mother.

Memorials are preferred to Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Minot or St. Charles Catholic Church in Bowman, ND.

Mass of Christian Burial: Tuesday, November 22, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot.

Interment: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot, ND.

Visitation: Monday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot.

Vigil Prayer Service: Monday at 7 p.m. at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot.
