Duane Feland
Sept. 18, 1934 – Oct. 9, 2022
SHERWOOD – Duane
Edward Feland, 88, rural
Antler, died Sunday, Oct.
9, 2022, at a Minot hospi-
tal.
Duane was born Sept.
18, 1934, in Thief River
Falls, Minn., to Ralph and
Wilma (Engelstad) Feland.
He was raised in Antler,
attended Wheaton Town-
ship School, and graduat-
ed from Antler High
School in 1952. He then
attended college in
Wahpeton before return-
ing home to farm with his
father.
Duane married the love
of his life, LaDonna Sout-
ham, on Oct. 3, 1954. He
gained a best friend and
partner, along with a big,
extended family of sisters-
and-brothers-in-law, and
life-long friends. Duane
and LaDonna farmed for
37 years in Wheaton
Township, Bottineau
County, and after retiring
from farming, Duane
launched another busi-
ness, a 20-year career of
custom combining with
his son-in-law, Chad
Driscoll.
Duane was well known
as a builder and inventor;
always ready to pull out
his pen and figure out
how to make things work.
He had an extensive list of
things he built throughout
the area including six
houses, three shops,
numerous Quonsets, pole
barns, sheds, kitchen ca-
binets, combine trailers,
and almost anything else
that needed to be built.
He also invented and pa-
tented one of the first
mechanical Rock Pickers,
designed and built his
own farm sprayers, and
had an extensive collec-
tion of re-built muscle-car
Camaros.
Duane was always ac-
tive in the community,
serving as a trustee and an
active member of St.
James Catholic Church,
Sherwood, a charter
member of the Antler Rur-
al Fire Department, and
an active and founding
member of the Antler
Outlaws. He also traveled
extensively throughout
his life, covering most of
the U.S., Alaska and
Hawaii, Europe, The Holy
Land, Australia, South
Africa; and a very memor-
able and special trip
through Russia.
Duane was known as a
sincere and honest man,
neighbor, true friend and
always known to have a
joke and a laugh. It was
always a three-hour visit
if you stopped at the farm.
Duane loved his family
fiercely and was so proud
of them all. He lived his
life to the fullest.
