Stanley Amon

Stanley “Stan” John

Amon, 96, died at the

Heart of America Medical

Center in Rugby on Satur-

day, February 26, 2022.

Stan was born on July

16, 1925 at home on a

farm near Upham, North

Dakota to John J. Jr. and

Gertrude Amelia Marie

Trebas Amon. In 1929

they moved to a farm in

the Deering area. Stan at-

tended school through the

seventh grade. He then

helped his parents run the

farm.

On May 22, 1944, he

married Marie Eva Mat-

tern in Deering. In 1945, a

daughter, Sharon, was

born and in 1948, Jacque-

line was added to the fam-

ily.

In 1944, he owned a

used car lot in Minot. He

was on call as a special

deputy for the Ward

County Sheriff Depart-

ment and also worked at

Westlie Motor Company

in Minot.

In 1948, he moved his

family to Rugby. He start-

ed selling cars and trucks

for M.J. McGuire. He also

sold I.H. equipment in the

area. He built and remo-

deled numerous houses in

Rugby. Stan enjoyed

hunting, fishing, garden-

ing, trap shooting, and

farming. In the North

Dakota badlands, he har-

vested the largest elk ever

taken in North Dakota.

The mount was donated

to Sully’s Hill Game

Preserve at Fort Totten

and is still on display at

the visitor’s center. He

collected Winchester ri-

fles and was the Turtle

Mountain target shooting

state champion in 1974

and 1975.

Stan collected and re-

stored Ford cars. In his

later years he collected

and restored Ford trac-

tors.

He always wanted to

farm and at 68 years old

he bought a farm. When

most people are thinking

of retiring, Stan went

farming.

In 1975 he opened his

own business, selling

White farm equipment,

and in 1979 he opened a

NAPA parts store in Rug-

by, which he ran until

2000.

He leaves living family

members, sister Adeline

Novak – Minot and her

son, Steve, two daughters,

Arlis and Donna – Wash-

ington state, nephew, Lee

Amon and nieces, Vicki

and Shane – Minot. He

also leaves his other sis-

ter, Joyleen Ellifrits- Ren-

ton, Washington, her two

sons, Kevin and Troy –

Washington her two

daughters, Laurice –

Pennsylvania and Darla –

Washington. He leaves his

daughter, Sharon (Nor-

man) Erickson – Rugby

and their sons, Michael,

Sandon,and Stephan

(Kim) Erickson. In addi-

tion he leaves his

son-in-law Joe Gross –

Devils Lake and his son,

Jess (Amy) Gross.

He was preceded in

death by his wife of 64

years on February 29,

2008, his brother Wallace,

his daughter, Jacqueline

Gross, grandsons Richard

and his wife Christine Er-

ickson and Joshua Gross.

Funeral services will be

held on Friday, March 4,

2022 at the Niewoehner

Funeral Home in Rugby at

11:00 A.M. Friends may

call after 8:00 A.M. on Fri-

day to pay their respects.

Stan will be buried in Lit-

tle Flower Cemetery later
