Delton Torno

Delton Torno, 82,

Minot, ND, passed away

Tuesday, February 8,

2022, at Trinity Hospital

in Minot.

Delton J. Torno was

born April 25, 1939, on a

farm near Max, ND, to

Emil and Emilie (Flath)

Torno. He was raised on

the farm and attended

school in Max. In 1956, he

graduated from Max High

School, where he enjoyed

playing basketball and

working for farmers out in

the field.

In 1955, at 16 years old,

he enrolled in a

correspondence course in

Architectural Drafting

from Chicago Technical

College. After high school,

he did carpentry work. He

did not go to college that

first year because his dad

was suffering from asth-

ma. He spent four years in

Minot working various

jobs and going to school

part time. He ended up

being a professional house

painter. He spent four

years at the School of Ar-

chitecture at North Dakota

State University in Fargo,

ND, where he received his

Bachelor of Architecture

Degree in 1965.

Upon graduation, he

worked one year in

Bismarck for Tutter and

Kosir Architects. He then

moved to Minot and took

a job with the firm of

Brunner, Hoeffel, Bohrer

& Associates.

He was united in mar-

riage to Violet E. Felan on

June 2, 1968. They were

blessed with two

daughters. In December of

2009 they were blessed

with 2 grandsons and a

month later 2 more

grandchildren. Another

grandchild arrived in

2011 during the flood.

His pride was his work

as an architect. In Minot,

he designed the 13 story

Milton Young Tower

apartment building. Other

projects included addi-

tions and remodeling of

the following: Trinity

Hospital, Northwest Clin-

ic and Skyway, Rugby

Hospital and Clinic, Trini-

ty Nursing Home, Butte

School, and many other

school projects. He was

involved with designing

the Minot Air Force Police

Security Building, Magic

City Campus High School

and Bottineau County

Courthouse. One memor-

able project was a heliport

on the roof of Trinity Hos-

pital. In 1991, he went to

Norway to study the

churches and later

designed the Gol Stave

Church at the Scandinavi-

an Heritage Park. In 1974,

the firm name was

changed to Brunner, Hoef-

fel, Torno & Nester. In

1995, the name became

Torno, Nester & Davison.

After spending 37 years as

an architect, Delton re-

tired in 2002.

In 1973, he designed his

home on Bel Air Dr.

which overlooked the

city. They lived there for

24 years. In 1978, he start-

ed building a cabin on

Lake Metigoshe. In 1984,

Governor Sinner appoint-

ed Delton to the State

Board of Architects,

which he served on for 14

years. The National Coun-

cil of Architectural Regis-

tration Boards brought

him traveling on many

trips. He was an active

member of Toastmasters,

Exchange Club and Sons

of Norway. He was a

member of Christ Luth-

eran Church in Minot.

In 2003, they bought

their first condo in Sun

City, AZ. They wintered

there for the next 15

years. While there, he was

active in a choir at

Shepard of the Valley

Lutheran Church. He en-

joyed many cruises with

his wife and vacations

with family and friends.

He enjoyed driving his

Firebird Convertible. With

the top down, he would

take kids and family

friends for rides to Dairy

Queen, and later driving it

with the Dakota Cruisers

at various events.

For the past two years,

Delton dedicated his time

caring for his wife Violet.

They resided at Edgewood

Vista. Delton enjoyed

morning coffee with his

friends at the Bistro and

Thursday evening meals

with other friends out on

the town. He was known

for his wisdom and his

rich, good sense of

humor. He was logical

and respectable during

many friendly debates. He

was understanding of oth-

ers, compassionate and

caring. Violet passed away

November 5, 2021.

His loving family in-

cludes: daughters,

Michelle (Steven) Fund-

ingsland, Minot, and Kar-

letta (Calvin) Marwede,

Bird Island, MN;

grandchildren, Keaten

and Colton Marwede and

Michael, Stephanie and

Miyah Fundingsland; sis-

ter, Sylvia Crosby, Bel-

lingham, WA;

sister-in-law, Carol Torno,

Roseville, CA;

brothers-in-law, Andrew

Felan, Sun City, AZ, and

Marvin Felan, Minot; and

many nieces, nephews,

cousins, and long-time

friends.

Delton was preceded in

death by his parents, Emil

and Emilia Torno; wife of

53 years, Violet;

parents-in-law, Arthur

and Marie Felan; sister,

Ruby Krause; brothers,

Lowel and Marlin Torno;

brother-in-law, Alvin

Felan and Frank Crosby;

and sisters-in-law, Irma

and Marie Felan.

Funeral: Tuesday,

February 15, 2022, at 1:30

p.m. at Christ Lutheran

Church in Minot. The ser-
