Paul Trout
July 24, 1949-June 30, 2021
Paul Dallas Trout, 71,
Minot, formerly of Sher-
wood, died Wednesday,
June 30, 2021, at Trinity
Hospital in Minot.
Paul was born July 24,
1949, to Aaron and Mar-
garet (Bengston) Trout.
Paul was Aaron and
Margaret’s only son. He
and his four sisters grew
up on the family farm,
four miles south of Sher-
wood. Paul was the best
big brother; creative,
thoughtful, kind, wise,
and courageous. He
taught his sisters many
wonderful lessons and
took them on many ad-
ventures growing up on
the farm. Paul attended
grade school and high
school in Sherwood. In
the fall of 1966, he attend-ed Lutheran Bible Insti-
tute in Seattle, Wash., for
six months. He complet-
ed his high school course-
work through correspon-
dence, graduating in 1967
from Sherwood High
School.
Paul was drafted into
the U.S. Military in the
fall of 1968 and served in
the U.S. Army from Feb.
1969 to Feb. 1971. He
completed basic training
in Ft. Lewis, Wash. In
July of 1969, following
basic training, he was as-
signed to the 81st Infantry
Division and joined his
Company in Fort Benning,
Ga., where he was to be
later sent to fight in the
Vietnam War. Paul ar-
rived in Vietnam on Oct.
4, 1969, and departed
from there in Jan. of 1970.
By the grace of God, Paul
returned home to the U.S.
after only 90 days in bat-
tle in Vietnam, due to a
medical condition. When
he arrived back in the
U.S., he spent time at
Letterman Army Hospital
in San Francisco, Calif.
He was then assigned to
Fort Riley, Kan., and the
138th Infantry Regiment
in March of 1970, where
he served out his Term of
Service. Paul was Honor-
ably Discharged from the
United States Army on
Feb. 5, 1971.
Paul returned home to
North Dakota in 1971 and
resumed working for his
Dad on the family farm.
On May 28, 1972, Paul
married Lois Olson at Our
Savior Lutheran Church
in Sherwood. Paul and
Lois lived in an apartment
in Sherwood until 1976,
before buying a trailer and
moving to the Trout Farm.
In addition to operating
his own farm, Paul operat-ed Trout Trucking until
the early 1990s. From
1973 to 1975, he and Lois
made many trucking trips
to Montana, Duluth and
Minneapolis. In 1989,
Paul and Lois and their
family moved into the
farmhouse on the Trout
Farm, after Paul’s father
turned over the farming
operation to him. The
couple lived there until
Jan. of 2010, when they
moved to Minot. Paul
operated at least some
portion of the Trout farm
until 2020.
God blessed Paul and
Lois with two wonderful
children, Mark and
Megan. Paul was an
amazing Father and ever
present in his children’s
lives. He attended every
single one of his
children’s sporting events
and always made time to
play catch with his son.
On one occasion, Paul
showed up completely
unannounced to one of
his son’s college baseball
games in Concordia, Kan.
A moment that Paul’s son
will remember forever.
On Oct. 29, 2012, Paul
lost the Love of His Life in
a tragic car accident. The
last nine years without his
beloved Lois were very,
very difficult for Paul.
Through many different
health problems, by the
Grace of God, he contin-
ued to press on each day
with unimaginable
strength and persever-
ance. He enjoyed going to
breakfast every morning
with some very special
friends at Primo Restau-
rant and meeting his
farming friends in Sher-
wood for coffee. In 2016,
his grandson Dallas was
born. Living long enough
to see his grandchildren
was something Paul
feared he would not ex-
perience. This year, he
was able to watch his son
take over the farming
operation completely. A
moment he had been
waiting for, for 40 years.
He recognized that each
new day is a precious gift
from God and he cher-
ished each moment he
was able to spend with
his family and the special
friends that have been by
his side.
