Raymond Sharkey, age
91 of Minot and
Westhope, passed away
on Saturday, January 9,
2021 at Trinity Hospital in
Minot. A private family
service will be held at Our
Lady of Grace in Minot,
with burial at St. Cecilia’s
Catholic Cemetery in
Towner.
Raymond Sharkey, son
of Ray and Mathilda
(Amon) Sharkey, was
born on May 1, 1929 in
Rugby, North Dakota. He
was raised in Towner and
graduated from Towner
High School where he met
the love of his life, Don-
rose Vetsch. Following his
graduation, he attended
Minot State Teacher’s Col-
lege before transferring to
North Dakota State
University in Fargo. His
college career had a brief
hiatus while he served in
the Army Air Corps/Air
Force National Guard in
the United States during
the Korean War and was
Honorably Discharged No-
vember 1952.
He married Donna in
1954 at the Cathedral of
St. Mary in Fargo.
Upon graduation from
NDSU in 1955 with a de-
gree in business, he
worked for US Rubber
Company in Fargo, 1st
National Bank in Moor-
head, MN, and in 1963
Raymond and Donna
moved to Maddock,
where Raymond became
president of Farmers State
Bank.
In 1972, Raymond and
his family moved to
Westhope, ND when he
and his partners pur-
chased Peoples State Bank
Westhope. Raymond was
a proud supporter of
Westhope, involved in
numerous civic improve-
ments and planted many
trees. In 2015 Raymond
and Donna moved to The
Wellington Assisted Liv-
ing in Minot where they
lived up until the time of
his death.
Raymond was received
into the Catholic Church
in May of 2014, was a
member of St Andrews
Catholic Church in
Westhope, and in recent
years, attended Our Lady
of Grace in Minot.
He is survived by: his
wife, Donrose of Minot;
son, Robert (Sandra
Luttkus) Sharkey of
Westhope; daughter, Lau-
ra (Joseph) Rowell of Win-
dermere, FL; grandchil-
dren, Johnathan (Emma
Olson-Sharkey) Sharkey,
Christopher (Shannon)
Sharkey, Thomas Rowell,
Christine Rowell, Benja-
min Sharkey,
great-granddaughter, Har-
riet Sharkey; sister-in-law,
Paula Kraft; cousins, in-
cluding Deborah Amon
(Cindy Bryan); numerous
nieces, nephews; other re-
latives and friends.
In addition to his
parents, Raymond was
preceded in death by
brothers-in-law Donald
Vetsch and Larry Kraft,
and sister-in-law Dona
Lou Vetsch.
