Merceda Zerr, 89, Har-
vey, ND, died on De-
cember 24, 2020, at the St.
Aloisius Hospital in Har-
vey. Arrangements with
Hertz Funeral Home, Har-
vey, ND.
Funeral mass will be at
10:30 a.m. on Wednesday,
December 30, 2020, at St.
Cecilia Catholic Church,
Harvey.
Burial will be in the St.
Cecilia Catholic Cemetery,
Harvey, ND.
Visitation will be from
4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
on Tuesday, December 29,
at the Hertz Funeral
Home, Harvey, ND.
Merceda was born June
5, 1931. She was the
daughter of Adam and
Magdalene (Hager) Zerr.
She grew up on the family
farm and attended a rural
country school near Har-
vey. She graduated from
Harvey High School in
1948 at the age of 16 and
started her teaching career
shortly thereafter. She
completed her education
at Minot State University
with a Bachelor of Sci-
ence Degree, a major in
Elementary Education and
a double minor in Busi-
ness Education and Physi-
cal Education. Merceda
started her teaching career
in Pierce County at a rural
school for 7 years, New
Town for 1 year, Bismarck
for 3 years, and lastly she
taught for 31 years at
Washington Elementary
in Minot, ND, where she
finally retired in 1991 at
the age of 59 years old,
after having taught for 42
years.
Merceda enjoyed travel-
ing. She traveled to 6
foreign countries, includ-
ing Spain, Italy, Norway,
Israel, France, Portugal
(Lourdes & Fatima), Cana-
da, and extensively in the
United States. Merceda
was a member of St.
Cecelia’s Catholic Church,
St. Cecelia’s Altar Society,
Catholic Daughter’s,
North Dakota Retired
Teachers Association, and
the Harvey Eagles Auxili-
ary.
Merceda was preceded
in death by her parents
Adam and Magdalene
(Hager) Zerr, brother
Adam J. “Sonny” Zerr, sis-
ter Agnes Zerr, sister-
in-law Joyce, brother-in-
law Peter P. Hoffart, a spe-
cial aunt Mary (Hager)
Volk who grew up with
the Adam Zerr family as a
young child until her mar-
riage to Nick Volk.
Merceda is survived by
one sister, Magdalene
(Pete) Hoffart of Harvey;
nephew Adam J. Zerr III
(Amanda Kristofik) of
Pittsburgh, PA; niece Jody
Doll-Wilhelm (Chad) of
Rochester, MN; nephew
Tim Pyle (Jeanette) of
Litchfield Park, AZ; niece
Debbie Liebelt (Kenny) of
Harvey, ND; nephew Da-
vid Alexander (Jean) of
Bismarck, ND; niece Darla
Martin (Mark) of Good-
year, AZ; great-nephews
and nieces Skylar Doll
and Bailey Doll of Roches-
ter, MN; Joel (Elissa)
Liebelt of Elko, NV; Jacey
