Arlene Beck

March 20, 1926-Nov. 27, 2020

Arlene Beck, 94, Minot,

died peacefully on Friday

November 27, 2020, with

her family by her side.

Arlene was born on a

farm NW of Columbus,

ND, on March 20, 1926, to

Lars and Jennie (Kihle)

Horntvedt. She attended

Brookside School, gra-

duated from Columbus

High School, and after

one summer of classes at

Minot State College, she

became a teacher herself.

She taught three years at

Brookside School, one

year in Lignite, and one

year at Foothills School

south of Lignite.

While teaching she met

the love of her life,

Douglas Beck. He lived on

a farm nearby and at-

tended the Lignite School

where they met. In 1949,

Arlene quit teaching to

move to Minot and work

in a bank, then later at

NSP as a telephone opera-

tor.

Arlene and Douglas

were married May 20,

1951, at Pleasant Prairie

Church northwest of

Columbus. To this blessed

union were born four chil-

dren: Daren, Lori, Anita,

and Tami.

Arlene became an awe-

some homemaker and

mother. She was well-

known for her lovely

smile and warm hospitali-ty. Arlene did so many

things to show her

love-baking, canning,

sewing, embroidering,

camping, fishing, travel-

ing, playing games and

cards (especially whist

parties and later when she

learned to play pinochle

where she seemed to al-

ways have an ace of dia-

monds in her hand). Her

homemade bread, buns,

lefse, and pies were ap-

preciated by all who

stopped in to visit-some

stopped in knowing that

was a day she would be

baking, so they could get a

free sample!

Her legacy continues on

with her children,

grandchildren, and great-

grandchildren-learning

the skills she taught and

doing the things she

loved. Many winters were

spent in Arizona, but they

always returned to their

real home in Minot. After

Douglas retired, they did

more traveling-the NE

states and Norway (3

times) were the highlights

of these journeys. In her

later years she would ba-

bysit her grandchildren at

various times, always hav-

ing a welcoming hug and

smile for each one!

Arlene is survived by:
