97 of Bottineau passed

away on Saturday, Oc-

tober 3, 2020 at the Good

Samaritan Home in Bot-

tineau ND. A private ser-

vice will be held

Sylvia Lorraine Nermyr

was born Nov. 3, 1922 to

Lars and Petra (Olson)

Nermyr in Westhope, ND.

She was one of six chil-

dren and grew up in the

Landa area. She moved to

Souris with her parents in

1938. She graduated from

Souris High School in

1942 and worked at the

State Bank of Souris. She

married Carl A. Skarphol

on Nov. 15, 1944 in

Souris, ND. Carl and Syl-

via moved to the Skarphol

family farm north of

Souris where they farmed

for 45 years and raised

five children before retir-

ing and moving to Bot-

tineau in 1989. Sylvia

moved to the Good

Samaritan Home in 2015.

Sylvia was an active

member of the Trinity

Lutheran Church in

Souris where she was a

Sunday School Teacher,

church treasurer, and

member of WELCA. She

also was an active

member of the Souris

School PTA, the Souris

community club, and

worked with the Boys

Scouts. She was very

proud to see three sons at-

tain the rank of Eagle

Scout.

Her love for taking pic-

tures leaves many lasting

memories. After moving

to Bottineau, Sylvia and

Carl attended Grace Luth-

eran Church and she en-

joyed her birthday club.

Sylvia loved spending

time and entertaining at

Lake Metigoshe in the

summer where there was

always lots of wonderful

food for all family and

friends to enjoy. Sylvia

was very proud of her

Norwegian heritage. Syl-

via loved to shop for

Christmas gifts, decorate

the entire house and bake

many Norwegian treats to

serve at the holidays. Carl

and Sylvia enjoyed many

get-aways in the winter to

Arizona and loved to trav-

el to visit their children

and grandchildren.

Sylvia will be greatly

missed by her husband,

Carl of 75 years; daughter,

Carol (Douglas) Schiff,

Surprise, AZ, 4 sons,

Ronald (Pamela), Osage,

MN; Dennis (Maddi),

Souris, ND; Donald

(Claire), Chaska, MN; and

Randy (Brenda) Sauk Ra-

pids, MN. She also is sur-

vived by 14 grandchil-

dren, Angela (David) Wi-

kas, Steven (Sheila)

Schiff, Kevin Schiff, Roni-

ca (Jeff) Brownson, Rox-

anne (Josh) Miller,

Jonathan (Whitney) Skar-

phol, Jeffrey Skarphol,

Janelle Skarphol, Sarah

(Dan) Wiese, Amy (Tay-

lor) Gould, Rachael

(Chris) Saylor, Amanda

Engen, Melissa Skarphol,

Nicholas Skarphol, 20

Great-Grandchildren, Col-

ton, Jack, Cassidy, Caitlin,

Hailey, Emma, Rowan,

Anya, William, Evelyn,

Naomi, Charlie, Micah,

Lauren, Breydon, Cather-

ine, Abigail, Carter, Ben-

nett, Athena; 3 step

Grandchildren and their

families and many nieces

and nephews who were a

big part of her family.

Sylvia was preceded in

death by her parents,

brothers Marvin,

Lawrence, Neil, and Lloyd

Nermyr, sister Helen Mill-

er and daughter-in-law,

Judeen Borgen Skarphol.

A celebration of life

will be held at a later date.
