Arlyss Ione Frey

June 14, 1925 – Oct 20, 2020

Arlyss Ione Frey, 95,

formerly of Granville, ND,

died Tuesday, October 20,

2020, in the Souris Valley

Care Center, Velva.

Arlyss was born June

14, 1925, at the Boutilier

homestead, rural Gran-

ville, to Vernon and Esth-

er (Boutilier) Bacon. She

was raised and educated

in the Granville Commun-ity.

Arlyss graduated from

Granville High School in

1943, the same school that

her mother, her five chil-

dren, and eleven

grandchildren graduated

from or attended. She

was especially proud to

also have 3 great-

grandchildren currently

attending the TGU

School. With encourage-

ment and support from

her father, she attended

Minot State Teachers Col-

lege and received a teach-

ing certificate in 1945.

She taught in Grenora and

Granville Schools from

1945 to 1949.

Arlyss married Allen

Frey, June 21, 1948, in the

Hope Congregational

Church, Granville. They

celebrated 63 years of

marriage prior to his

death, in 2011. Arlyss

and Allen began farming

their home place south of

Granville in 1950. She

lived there until January

of 2019, when she moved

to Elmcroft Assisted Liv-

ing, Minot. In August of

2019, Arlyss moved to

Souris Valley Care Center,

Velva, where she lived

until her death. The fami-

ly was very grateful for

the excellent care she re-

ceived there.

In 1969, with the en-

couragement of her hus-

band, Arlyss returned to

Minot State University to

earn her Bachelor’s De-

gree in Education. Arlyss

then returned to teaching

in 1971, starting in Deer-

ing and then to Granville

in 1973, where she taught

5th and 6th grade and

Chapter 1 until retiring in

1997. She continued as a

substitute teacher until

she was 80 years old. Ar-

lyss was a natural teacher,

always looking for the

best in her students. She

worked hard to make sure

that all of her students

were valued and special

in her classroom.

Arlyss contributed a

great deal of time and ef-

fort to her church and her

community. She served

as Sunday School Super-

intendent and Women’s

Society Treasurer at Hope

Congregational Church,

where she was a lifelong

member. She was a

member of the Order of

Eastern Star for over 75

years and served as their

clerk. She also was an ac-

tive member of the Legion

Auxiliary and the Blanche

M Nelson Study Club.

She was a great supporter

of the local FFA Chapter

and received an honorary
