Mathew Joe Malek

Mathew Joe Malek, 31,

passed away on Sunday

September 6, 2020 at his

home in Detroit Lakes,

Minnesota. Mathew, the

son of Richard and Pennie

Malek, was born on Oc-

tober 29, 1988 in St. Paul,

Minnesota.

He was raised in Minot,

North Dakota and attend-

ed Minot Public Schools

graduating with honors.

During his early years Mat

was an avid hunter and

fisherman spending many

hours in the field or in a

boat. His favorite time of

the year was fall when he

was able to go hunting

with his Grandfather

Nickle and goose hunt.

Mat also enjoyed playing

hockey during the winter

and played goalie for

numerous teams in the

Minot Hockey Booster or-

ganization and Minot

High. After graduation

from high school Mat at-

tended the University of

North Dakota in Grand

Forks majoring in Biology

and was accepted into the

School of Medicine.

Prior to beginning his

medical studies, Mat mar-

ried Danielle Ness in De-

vils Lake, North Dakota.

From this union three

children were born (Park-

er (2013), Beckett (2017)

and Annistyn (2019). Mat

loved being a father and

spending as much time as

possible with his chil-

dren.

Mat completed Med

School in May of 2015

and began residency in

Sioux Falls, South Dakota

where he completed his

surgical residency in June

2020. Following residency

Mat accepted a position

with Stanford Health in

Detroit Lakes where he

looked forward to begin-

ning his medical career.

Mathew is survived by:

his wife Danielle and their

children, Parker, Beckett

and Annistyn; his Parents

Pennie and Richard

Malek, brother Jason, sis-

ter Ashley Holter and her

husband Jeff and son

Xylis, Grandmother Viona

Nickle and numerous

Aunts, Uncles and

Cousins in the Minot,

North Dakota and Buffalo,

New York area who love

and miss him dearly.

Mathew was preceded

in death by: his Grandfa-

ther Malvey Nickle,

Grandparents Stanley and

Rita Malek, and Uncle

Daniel Malek.

Funeral Services for

Mathew will be held on

Monday, September 14,

2020 at 3:00 p.m. at the

World War Memorial

Building, Devils Lake ND.

Visitation will be held

at the Gilbertson Funeral

Home, Devils Lake on

Sunday, September 13th

from noon until 2:00 pm

for his family and friends

from Minot and continue

on Monday at the funeral

home until 11:00 a.m.

Burial will be in the De-

vils Lake Cemetery.
