Helen Moberg
Dec. 8, 1923 – Sept. 27, 2020
MOHALL – Helen
Moberg, 96, Mohall, died
Sunday, Sept. 27, 2020, at
a Bottineau nursing home,
grateful to have spent her
final years close to her
roots in the Good Samari-
tan Society-Bottineau.
Helen was known for
her wit and laughter.
Raised in Willow City,
Helen was a dedicated
wife to her husband of 74
years and devoted and
loving mother to her nine
children.
Born Helen Marie
Lyngstad on Dec. 8, 1923,
to Ole and Ida (Rockvoy)
Lyngstad, she was bap-
tized in the rural Bot-
tineau County Norwegian
Evangelical Lutheran
Church and rode the
school bus driven by her
father. After schooling she
and sister, Adeline, seized
an opportunity when they
were approached by a
man who came to their
farm looking for help in
his Mohall cafe. She met
Lloyd Moberg there and
they were married Aug. 3,
1943, in Plentywood,
Mont. The couple farmed
northwest of Mohall fol-
lowing his service in
World War II. During one
especially hard winter, 12
weeks elapsed before
Helen could leave the
farm.
They bought some land
and moved their young
family to two miles west
of Mohall. She worked at
the admissions desk at the
Renville/Bottineau County
Memorial Hospital and he
worked on a diversified
farm. Then Lloyd took
employment with Stan-
dard Oil in Sherwood,
where they also owned
and operated L&H Market
grocery store for six years.
While living in the lake
cottage at Lake Metigoshe
and the town of Bottineau
for a brief time, they
planned to purchase the
Mohall Motel in 1977.
Within a few years, they
were able to retire and
build a home back on the
farm. They embarked on
travel in earnest and even-
tually toured all 50 states
visiting children scattered
across the United States
and Canada.
Helen devoted a great
deal of herself over the
years to serving her com-
munity and women’s or-
ganizations. She was ac-
tive at local and district
levels in the Brandon
Busy Bee Homemakers
Club, Study Club, Ren-
ville County Historical So-
ciety Board, and the
American Legion Auxili-
ary. In leisure times she
enjoyed playing rag time
piano, square dancing,
and polka dancing. She
was celebrated for her ex-
traordinary bread making,
and she mentored some of
her sons and daughters on
how to prepare and enjoy
lutefisk and lefse.
