Anthony “Tony” Kulig

Anthony “Butchy” Ed-

ward Kulig, passed away

on the morning of Thurs-

day, July 9, 2020. He was

72 years old, had a beauti-

ful life, and will be

missed dearly.

Tony was born in Pitts-

burgh and raised in Car-

negie, PA, where he

played baseball, (some)

football and wrestled for

Chartiers Valley High

School. Tony made his

way West in 1966 with in-

tentions of attending

Moorhead State Univer-

sity. After “plans

changed” he landed at

Minot State University,

where he was part of

several organizations, in-

cluding the Sigma Tau

Gamma fraternity, and

was on the wrestling and

football teams. After col-

lege he enjoyed playing

fast pitch softball for the

MC Reps and hosted an

annual golf tournament

known as The Shirt Shed

Open that lasted over 10

wild years until the city

put the kibosh on it. He

made lifelong friends and

memories that he would

talk about until the day he

left (a lot of them not suit-

able for publication).

Throughout his life,

Tony developed an in-

teresting work resume

that included construc-

tion, tending bar at The

Sheep Shed, launching a

T-shirt shop called The

Shirt Shed (working with

his brother Walter), and

was part of two local res-

taurants. He also had ren-

tal properties, was the

first director of the Minot

Area Homeless Program

and a board member with

the Minot Commission on

Aging. He had a deter-

mined, smart and creative

spirit that was infectious

to those around him, and

even in “retirement”

found himself pondering

new investment oppor-

tunities with his wife,

Marla, over morning cof-

fee and the newspaper.

Tony married Marla

(his “Marly”) in 1989.

They both relished their

annual trips to Las Vegas,

great times at their cabin

on Lake Sakakawea, and

watching TV on the

highest possible volume.

Tony loved his children

and grandkids, golfing

with his friends, playing

Bingo and cards with his

crew at the Barley Pop,

eating spaghetti with

“MEAT SAUCE” and

watching the Steelers

(usually defeat the Vik-

ings). He will be remem-

bered by his family as a

loving, hilarious, reliable,

and honest man who was

always there to help how-

ever he could. Plus, his

laugh was the absolute

best.

There will be a public

visitation from 11 AM to

1 PM on Tuesday, July

14th, at Thompson-Larson

Funeral Home, followed

by a family-only service.

Tony is survived by his

wife Marla, son Anthony

(wife Kelly Smith),

daughter Keli Kramer

(husband Matt and son

Luca), son Gage (wife Lisa

and sons Klay and Cy),

brother Walter (wife

Carole), mother Tressa;

sister-in-law Colette Ny-

bakken (husband Jack)

and niece and nephews.

The family asks that

any memorials be made

to the charity of your

choice, or just quietly do

something nice for some-

one in need.
