Caroline J. Natwick

Jan. 2, 1932 – Dec. 31, 2019

Caroline J. Natwick was

born on January 2, 1932 to

Olaf and Anna (Pederson)

Holen in Upham, North

Dakota. She died at the

age of 87 years on Tues-

day, December 31, 2019 at

Trinity Homes in Minot,

North Dakota.

Caroline was the only

girl in a family of six boys

and was adored by her

brothers. She grew up in

the Upham area, graduat-

ing from Upham high

school in 1950. Caroline

married Dale Natwick on

November 6, 1950 and

they raised their children

on a ranch south of Town-

er. She was a devoted

mom and wife who was

an incredible cook and

baker. She patiently tried

to teach her family to

make her famous lefse

and carrot and pea salad,

which no one could quite

replicate! After her chil-

dren were grown and liv-

ing on their own, she

started her new life in

Towner. Caroline enjoyed

quilting and spent time at

the church making quilts

for families in need. Be-

ing a talented artist, she

also enjoyed wood work-

ing, furniture refinishing,

ceramics, knitting and

crocheting. She loved

gardening and was also a

beekeeper with her niece,

Mary Holen. Caroline

went to work for her

brother, Morris Holen

Construction for twenty

years. Her children talked

her into retiring, but that

didn’t last long and she

went to work at Towner

State Nursery until her

mid-80’s. She had a

strong work ethic that we

could all strive to achieve.

Most importantly to Caro-

line was her family. She

was patient, compas-

sionate and accepting.

She found great joy in

watching her grandchil-

dren through their life’s

journey and was very

proud of all of their ac-

complishments.

Caroline is survived

and held in loving

memory by four children,

Connie (Rick) Irey of Lake

Metigoshe, Mark (Penny)

Natwick of Bismarck, Teri

(Randy) Dosch of

Karlsruhe and Marci

(Myron) Gefroh of Minot;

six grandchildren, Anne

Haskins, Garitt Irey,

Nathan Natwick, Lindsey

Presser, Ashley Wallner

and Ethan Gefroh; ten

great grandchildren; three

step grandchildren, Pa-

trick Irey, Aaron Irey and

Jason Irey; a brother Alvin

(Carol) Holen of Minot;

nieces, nephews; other re-

latives and friends. She

was preceded in death by

her daughter, Candice

Ann, who died as a child;

Dale Natwick; brothers,

Oliver, Glen, Morris, Irvin

and Orrin Holen.

Written by Caroline’s

oldest grandchild, Anne,

and perfectly describes

her:

The strong ones, often

they are the quiet ones.

The ones with a solemn

reserve. The pillars. The

sturdy. The ones who

hold others up, without

acclaim, with no recogni-

tion or fanfare. The ones

who go the extra mile.

The humble, the heroic.

The ones who hold their

joy and suffering in

silence, who bear the

weight of the world. They

are the fiercest, the gritti-

est, the most beautiful.

Filled with unspoken

valor, faith, and the

deepest love. They are the

brave ones, the great ones.

The quietly bold.

Per Caroline’s wishes,

there will be a private

family service that will

take place in the spring

with burial in the Bloom-

field Cemetery, Upham.
