Mavis Netzloff

June 16, 1930-Dec. 13, 2019

Mavis Ida (Teigen)

Netzloff, 89, passed away

on Friday, December 13,

2019 in hospice care in

Minot, ND, surrounded by

all five of her children

and their spouses.

Mavis was born on June

16, 1930 to Irvin and Wil-

ma (Carpenter) Teigen in

Towner, ND. She and her

6 siblings were raised in

the Truax Mine communi-ty near Velva, ND where

Mavis attended elementa-ry and high school. As a

young woman she moved

to Minot where she

worked at the Five and

Dime Store.

Mavis and Joe Schwan

of Karlsruhe were married

from 1948 to 1967. Mavis

and Joe had five children:

Joe, Sheila, Bruce, Valerie,

and Cindy. While they

lived in Minot, Mavis nur-

tured her growing family

and helped her husband

in the development of

their businesses, North

Hill Bowl Restaurant and

the Pepsi Bottling Com-

pany. When their Pepsi

franchise expanded, the

family moved to Mason

City, IA, Jackson, MS, and

Meridian, MS. They re-

turned to Velva where

Mavis raised her children

who all graduated from

Velva High School. She

instilled in her children

the values of hard work,

responsibility, and respect

for others. When Mavis

married Joe, she joined

the Catholic Church and

made sure her children

were raised in the faith.

A talented seamstress,

Mavis made her children’s

clothing and even sewed

the wedding dresses,

veils, and bridesmaid

dresses for Sheila, Valerie,

and Cindy. She expressed

her artistic skills and

creativity through crafts

and interior decorating

which gave her pleasure

for all her life.

Mavis married Bill

Netzloff of Velva on May

29, 1969. Together Bill

and Mavis owned and

operated the Mint Bar and

Restaurant in Velva for

over 30 years. The food

that was served in the bar

restaurant, from Bill’s

homemade hamburger

buns to Mavis’ delicious

knoephla soup, was

famous throughout

McHenry and Ward coun-

ties. During the summers,

when Bill worked con-

struction, Mavis took over

all aspects of the bar busi-

ness.

As her grandchildren

began to arrive, “Grandma

Mave’s” home was the

center of holiday celebra-

tions, especially Christ-

mas and the 4th of July.

Mavis knew her

grandchildren well. She

understood their hopes

and dreams, and shared

her wisdom and love with

all the generations of her

family.

Mavis is survived by

her five children: Joe

(Laura) Schwan, Sheila

(J.R.) Warner, and Bruce

(Judy) Schwan, all of

Minot, Valerie (Herb)

Scherbinske of Layton,

UT, and Cindy Schwan of

Minot. Her children gifted

her with 18 grandchil-

dren, 51

great-grandchildren, and 2

(soon to be 3)

great-great-grandchildren.

She leaves behind her

three beloved sisters: Bev-

erly (Mike) Ballentyne,

Ione (Vernon) Klimpel,

and Donna (Bob) Drabb.

She was preceded in

death by her husband,

Bill, parents, Wilma and

Irvin, and three brothers,

Manny, Mason, and

Duane.
