Norman Abernathey

Norman Helming Aber-
nathey, 94, Minot, former-ly of Lansford, died
Thursday, Nov. 7, 2019, at
a Garrison nursing home.
He was born Aug. 17,
1925, in Gooding, Idaho,
to William and Ruth
(Helming) Abernathey.
The family lived in Lans-
ford for a few years until a
house fire forced them to
move. He was raised in
Souris and attended
school there.
Norman enlisted in the
U.S. Navy Sept. 9, 1942.
He served as a Water
Tender Second Class at
the NTC Great Lakes, IL,
on the USS Spence and
the USS Guildford. He
was honorably discharged
July 10, 1946. He returned
to the Minot area and
worked for Mackley Con-
struction.
Norman married Gladys
Handeland June 16, 1947.
They purchased a farm in
Elms Township, Bottineau
County, near Lansford,
and farmed for many
years. In addition to farm-
ing, Norman continued to
work for Mackley Con-
struction, and later for
Mattson Construction.
Norman and Gladys
moved to Minot in 2008
and to Edgewood Vista in
2018. They recently resid-
ed at the Benedictine Liv-
ing Center, Garrison.
Norman was a member
of Trinity Lutheran
Church, Lansford, and
served on the church
council. He was a 70-year
member of the Kenneth L.
Renz American Legion
Post #279, the Moose
Lodge and Masons. Nor-
man enjoyed spending
time with his family at
their lake cabin on Lake
Metigoshe.

Funeral: 10:30 a.m.,
Wednesday, Nov. 13,
2019, at Vincent United
Methodist Church, Minot.
Burial: Sunset Memori-al Gardens, rural Minot.

Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2019, at
the church.
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m.,
Tuesday, at the church.
