Gary Jeffrey

Sept. 11, 1935-Oct. 1, 2019

Gary N. Jeffrey, 84, Red-

mond, Oregon, formerly

of Lone Tree, ND died

suddenly as a result of a

stoke in a Redmond hos-

pital on October 1, 2019.

Gary was born at home

on the family farm to Neil

and Nellie (Etter) on land

his paternal grandfather

homesteaded in Lone

Tree. After graduating

from Des Lacs High

School in North Dakota,

Gary attended LeTour-

neau University in

Longview, TX studying

mechanical engineering.

A stint in the Navy was

next with Petty Officer

Jeffrey serving on the USS

Ajax stationed off Japan.

When he finished his

tour with the Navy, Gary

returned to North Dakota

and began rodeoing. He

spent several years as a

saddle bronc rider, earn-

ing a few buckles and

reaching the Finals in

1969 at Bainville, MT.

Gary had started breaking

horses when he was still

in high school, and after

his rodeo days were done,

he continued as a horse

trainer and a farrier.

Prior to moving to Ore-

gon, Gary was hired to be

in a Swanson TV com-

mercial playing a cowboy.

They apparently wanted a

touch of authenticity!

And his TV career didn’t

end there. After Gary and

Gayle moved to Terre-

bonne in 1990, he was in

a commercial for Cabela’s

featuring him wearing

Carhart clothing and

filmed at the home he and

Gayle built by Smith Rock

State Park, another for the

Wovel snow shovel filmed

at Timberline Lodge on

Mt. Hood, and one for

Ranch at the Canyons, an

exclusive residential com-

munity that also con-

tained a working ranch

and farm.

Once settled in Terre-

bonne, Gary spent four-

teen years working

part-time for the Forest

Service where he was able

to continue his lifelong

love affair with horses by

riding the trails of the

Ochoco National Forest

and the Crooked River Na-

tional Grassland.

Gary is survived by:

Gayle, his wife of 44

years, brother Darol (Ar-

lene), sister Donna, step-

daughter Celeste (Mark)

Cuellar, stepson Bryan

Hill, grandchildren, great-

grandchildren, nieces,

nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services are Fri-

day, October 11th at Zion

Lutheran Church, Red-

mond, OR and can be live

streamed from the

church’s website
