Roger Haugen, 78, rural
Des Lacs died on Thurs-
day, September 5, 2019 in
a Minot nursing home
from complications relat-
ed to Alzheimer’s Disease.
He was surrounded by his
loving family when he
died.
Roger Keith Haugen
was born on May 31, 1941
in Minot to Clarence and
Isabel Gladys (Underdahl)
Haugen. He was raised on
a farm near Ryder and
educated in Ryder. He
graduated from Ryder
High School in 1959 and
from Minot State
Teacher’s College in 1963.
During these years he be-
came known as “Rocky”
and “Buck,” nicknames he
retained for many years.
Roger married Kay
Oberholtzer on July 19,
1964 at Zion Lutheran
Church in Mohall. They
made their home in the
Minot area and he was
employed for five years as
a Sixth Grade Teacher at
North Plains Elementary
School on the Minot Air
Force Base. He continued
his education at Northern
State Teachers College in
Aberdeen, SD where he
received his Master’s De-
gree in Guidance Counsel-ing. Roger was employed
as guidance counselor at
Erik Ramstad Junior High
School – Minot from 1970
– 1996. Also, Roger farmed
in the Mohall, Lansford
and Ryder areas. Follow-
ing his retirement as a
counselor he continued
farming at Ryder. Roger
and Kay had moved to the
Des Lacs area in 1969.
Roger was a longtime
member of Rose Valley
Lutheran Church where
he served on the church
council and as treasurer
and a former member of
St. John Lutheran Church
– Ryder. Also, he was a
member of the Moose
Lodge, local, state and na-
tional education associa-
tions, ND Counselors As-
sociation and Rolling
Green Township Board.
He especially enjoyed
farming, hunting, travel-
ing and attending and
supporting his children’s
and grandchildren’s ac-
tivities. Although he was
known as a man of few
words, he was always
there for his family and
friends.
Roger’s loving family
includes: his wife of 55
years Kay; children: Troy
Haugen of Mohall, Melis-
sa (Mike) Upgren of
Bismarck and Chad
(Kasey) Haugen of Horace;
grandchildren: Bailey and
Ethan Upgren and Mor-
gan, Jayli and Lukas Hau-
gen; siblings: Doris Nel-
son of Alexandria MN and
Donna (Ron) Sherven of
Wahpeton; in laws: Donna
Haugen and Shirley Hau-
gen both of Minot, Carol
(Charlie) Clark of Cypress
TX, Sandi (Jerry) Becker
of Mohall and Jerry (Deb)
Oberholtzer of Lansford,
aunt Ramona Schroepfer
of Crystal, MN and
several nieces, nephews
and cousins.
Roger was preceded in
death by: his parents,
brothers: Richard and
Robert Haugen and
brothers-in-law: Richard
Nelson and Kenneth
Faunce and infant grand-
son: Liam Haugen.
Celebration of the Life
of Roger Haugen: Friday,
September 13, 2019 at
11:00 a.m. in Christ Luth-
eran Church – Minot.
Interment: in Rosehill
Memorial Park – Minot.
Visitation: Thursday
from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00
p.m. with a prayer service
at 6:00 p.m. in Thomas
Family Funeral Home –
Minot.
Memorials are preferred
