James Smith, of New
Town, passed away
peacefully at his daugh-
ter’s home in Albu-
querque, NM, on Monday,
August 5, 2019, surround-ed by family. He was
born on May 30, 1932,
and raised in Makoti. He
attended Minot State Col-
lege and graduated with a
bachelor’s degree in busi-
ness. James spent most of
his life farming in western
North Dakota and had a
love of the land. One of
his most important ac-
complishments in this life
was the relationship he
developed with each of
his 8 grandchildren.
James is survived by
his loving wife of 65
years, Merilyn Smith;
daughters, Delores Peder-
son (Tommy Carrion) of
Albuquerque, NM, and
Melinda Thorton (Esley)
of Bismarck; son, Leigh-
ton Smith (Dianne) of Val-
ley City; grandchildren,
Nicholas Pederson (Mel-
ise), Nathan Pederson,
both of Albuquerque,
Kylie Anderson (Orlando)
Green Bay, WI, Madison
Smith, Trierre Smith, and
Esley Thorton (Ellie), all
of Fargo, Matthew Thor-
ton (Pam) and Rhannon
Thorton (Laiken), both of
Bismarck; great-grand-
children, Kinley and Eve
Thorton of Bismarck, and
Cale Ludwig of Fargo.
There will be a private
family burial with a cele-
bration of life at a later
date. In lieu of flowers,
please give to Hospice of
New Mexico.
