Carol Elizabeth Green
July 5, 1927 – August 9, 2019
Carol was born in
Towner, ND to John
Green and Gladys
(Flowers) Green, the old-
est of four children. Her
family moved to Upham,
where she and her sister
Fay set pins at her father’s
bowling alley. She loved
music and dancing. Carol
married Douglas
Shoemaker and farmed,
raising three children –
Mark, Marsha, and Marla.
For many years she
owned her own business,
the Jack & Jill grocery in
Upham. She was re-
nowned for her baking
(hiding goodies so well
her children became
skilled searchers). She
bowled in leagues much
of her life, and was asked
if she’d consider trying to
join a professional league;
she decided it would take
the fun out of bowling.
In 1989, Carol retired
and moved to Dodge City,
KS for a time, until mov-
ing to Casper, WY to take
care of her daughter Mar-
sha. She watched over
Marsha for 15 years, a
dedicated advocate for her
care and quality of life.
Carol often seemed shy
but was happy around
people. At the end of her
life, with dementia, the
worries seemed to dissi-
pate and she spent the last
five years living amongst
many, who enjoyed her
laughter and curiosity and
good spirits. Carol died on
August 9, 2019 in Garris-
on, ND.
Carol is survived by
her sister Fay Benson, her
son Mark Shoemaker,
daughter Marla O’Byrne,
grandsons Michael
Schaan and Wade Schaan,
granddaughters Shawna
Hostetler and Haley
Shoemaker, and 11
great-grandchildren and
great-great-grandchildren.
She is predeceased by her
brother John Green, sister
Judy Green, daughter
Marsha Lynne (Shoemak-
er) Schaan, grandson Jam-
ie Schaan, and former
husband Douglas Rex
Shoemaker.
There will be a grave-
side service on Thursday,
8/15, 10:00 a.m. at the
Bloomfield Cemetery in
Upham, followed by cof-
fee at New Hope Church.
