Jewel Gustafson

April 12, 1921 – April 15, 2019

Jewel Gustafson, 98,

Minot, formerly of Lignite,

passed away Monday,

April 15, 2019 in a Minot

assisted living facility.

Jewel Junietta Smith

was born April 12, 1921,

to James and Minnie

(Reistad) Smith on the

family farm in Foothills

Township, Burke County

near Powers Lake, ND.

She was raised and edu-

cated in Powers Lake, gra-

duating from Powers Lake

High School in 1938.

Jewel then attended Minot

State Teachers College.

She taught in several rural

schools in the area and in

elementary in Portal for

two years and 18 years in

Lignite and Burke Central,

for a total of 30 years.

On February 16, 1941,

she married Raymond

Gustafson. They had four

children. They lived in

various places but mostly

in Lignite. After retiring,

they spent several winters

in Quartzite, AZ. Ray-

mond passed away June

12, 2003.

Jewel was a member of

Christ Lutheran Church in

Lignite, the American Le-

gion Auxiliary, and the

Lignite Senior Citizens.

She enjoyed traveling,

crafts, crocheting, read-

ing, playing cards, and

especially spending time

with her family and

friends.

Jewel is survived by her

sons, James and Raymond

“Jerry” (Ella Marie) Gus-

tafson; daughters: Caryn

(David) Peterson and

Melanie (Dennis) Smith; 8

grandchildren, Weslie

Peterson, Daniel (Laura)

Peterson, Carissa (Tho-

mas) Mongeon, Michael

Smith, Tracey (Dominick)

Perrone, Robert (Susan)

Smith, Jeffrey (Jannelle)

Gustafson, and Heidi Gus-

tafson; 14 great-grand-

children Megan Peterson

and her special friend,

Brady, Lakin Peterson and

her fiance, Austin, Bradon

Peterson, and Ryen Peter-

son, Sydnie and Cortnie

Mongeon, Tyler and Emi-

ly Gustafson, Brittany

Gustafson, Sarah (Daniel)

Schommer, Nicole Smith,

Kallie Schloer, Brianna

Schloer (Josh Clark), and

Jackson and Melayna

Smith; two great-great-

grandchildren, Linkoln

Schommer and Kayzlee

Clark; step-grand-

daughter, Ashley Perrone;

and numerous nieces,

nephews and extended

family.

She was preceded in

death by her parents; hus-

band, Raymond; brother,

Sheldon Smith, sister,

Pearl (Vergil) Young,

daughter-in-law, Diana

Gustafson; as well as

several sisters-in-law and

brothers-in-law.

Memorial Service:

Thursday, April 18, 2019

at 1:30 pm at Christ Luth-

eran Church in Lignite,

ND.

Inurnment: Monday,

April 22, 2019 at 2:00 pm

at the North Dakota

Veterans Cemetery in

Mandan.

Visitation will be one

hour prior to the service

at the church.
