Major Edward “Ed” J. Miller

Major Edward “Ed” J.

Miller, USAF, Retired, 53,

Glenburn, ND, went to be

with the Lord, on Mon-

day, December 3, 2018 as

a result of an automobile

accident.

Ed was born on May 6,

1965, the son of Stanley

and Mercedes (Harten-

stein) Miller in Tiffin,

Ohio, the seventh of ten

children. He was raised

and educated in Betts-

ville, Ohio, graduating

from Bettsville High

School in 1983. While in

high school, he was active

in basketball, cross coun-

try, and track. He was also

involved in 4-H and

Junior Leadership and Re-

creation Club. After high

school, he attended Kent

State University where he

was active in Air Force

ROTC. He graduated with

a bachelor’s degree in

Zoology in 1987.

Upon graduation, Ed

was commissioned a

Second Lieutenant in the

USAF, entered Undergra-

duate Navigator Training,

and earned his flight

wings as a B-52 Electronic

Warfare Officer. He

served his nation for 20

years, participating in

multiple combat deploy-

ments. He was stationed

at Minot AFB, Fort Drum

in Upstate New York, and

Barksdale AFB in Louisia-

na.

After his retirement in

2007, he worked at

Menard’s in the cabinet

and appliance depart-

ment. He later became a

B-52 simulator system

operator at Minot AFB, a

job he held until his

death.

Ed married Kathy Olson

at First Baptist Church in

Minot, ND on June 22,

1991.

Ed was very active in

First Baptist Church in

Minot, serving as an usher

and working with AWA-

NA. His hobbies and in-

terests were widespread.

He was involved in 4-H as

a club leader and council

member, and he was a

member of both the Minot

Magic Squares square

dancing club and the ND

Beekeepers Association.

He raised rabbits, chick-

ens, and bees, with an in-

satiable curiosity to al-

ways learn more and a

contagious enthusiasm as

he discussed them with

others. He loved the out-

doors. Family was very

important to Ed. He will

be remembered and

missed for his crazy sense

of humor, the way he

could bring joy to any

room, and his willingness

to drop everything

without hesitation to help

anyone.

Ed is survived by his

wife of 27 years, Kathy,

Glenburn, ND; son,

Steven, attending Law

School at University of

Michigan; daughters Emi-

ly, attending Graduate

School at Minot State

University, and Sarah, at-

tending the University of

North Dakota; siblings,

Danita Podach, Forest,

OH, Anthony (Kim),

Green Springs, OH,

Matthew (Christine),

Republic, OH, Jerome

(Laura), Tiffin, OH, Dr.

Louise Miller, Wooster,

OH, Dr. Timothy (Julie),

Medina, OH, and Maria

(Aaron) Scherger, Tiffin,

OH; sisters-in-law, Kristy,

Tiffin, OH and Catherine,

Mingo Junction, OH;

father-in-law, Harley Ol-

son, Bottineau, brother-

in-law, Donavon (Sue) Ol-

son, West Fargo, ND; and

sister-in-law, Karinda

Rousseau, Las Vegas, NV,

along with numerous

nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in

death by his parents,

Stanley and Mercedes,

mother-in-law, Karen Ol-

son, two brothers, Francis

and Philip, Captain,

USAF, and brother-

in-law, Steve Olson.

Funeral Service: Satur-

day, December 8, 2018, at

10 a.m. at First Baptist

Church, Minot, ND.

Visitation: Friday, De-

cember 7, 2018, 5 p.m.

until 7 p.m. at Thompson-

Larson Funeral Home,

Minot, ND.
