Avis Laverne Mayer,
“kunaa”U atna” (Medicine
Mother), entered eternal
life on Thursday, De-
cember 27, 2018 at a hos-
pital in Stanley.
She was born to May
Howard and Adrian Baker
on November 23, 1937
and was a child of the
Prairie Chicken Clan. She
was raised at Indepen-
dence and graduated from
Stephan Catholic Mission
School in Stephan, SD in
1957. Avis married Ervin
Mayer in Reno, Nevada in
1961; they were blessed
with three daughters.
She worked for Indian
Health Service at the
Minne-Tohe Health Clinic
as an Administrative As-
sistant and retired after 31
years. She then worked
for the Three Tribes
Museum. She loved an-
imals, especially pugs,
and cherished her family.
She is survived by: her
daughters, Dr. Monica
Mayer and Holly
Mayer-Taft (Karmon);
grandchildren, Lexi Taft
(DJ), Nathaniel Mayer,
Sevant Taft (Jacobi), Shay-
na Taft, Braedyn (Cody),
Averyl Taft, Nevans Taft
and Monika Charging;
great-grandchildren,
Jaivelyn Roze, Lucas
Jerome, Daxyn Slai and
Joltyn Crue; brothers,
Peter Coffey, Jr. (Debbie)
and G. Russell Gillette;
sisters, Glenda Baker Em-
bry, Ardel Jean Baker,
Judith Danks (Marty),
Mary Coffey, Jeanette Cof-
fey, Phyllis Howard,
Florence Brady, Grace Gil-
lette and Barbara Roy;
adopted sister, Dr. Mar-
garet Nordell; and
numerous nieces and
nephews.
Avis was preceded in
death by: her parents;
husband, Ervin; daughter,
Renee Mayer; 2 brothers,
and 6 sisters.
Funeral: Mon. Dec. 31 at
10 a.m. in St. Anthony
Catholic Church, New
Town; her wake was held
on Sunday. Burial will be
at New Town Cemetery,
New Town.
