Eleanor Alice Peake
Guenthner, a hardy girl
from the prairies of North
Dakota, was born on April
27, 1917 in Bismarck,
North Dakota to Dewey
Scott Peake and Alice
(Moore) Peake. Eleanor
passed away October 4 at
the age of 101 at Good
Samaritan Society,
Mohall, North Dakota.
She was raised and at-
tended school in Mandan,
North Dakota where she
graduated from Mandan
High School in 1935. She
graduated from Jack’s
Business College in
Bismarck and then
worked at the Capitol.
She married Herbert
Adam Guenthner on Sep-
tember 24, 1936 at St.
Joseph’s Catholic Church
in Mandan. They moved
to Minot, North Dakota in
March of 1940, where she
raised her five children.
They lived in Eastwood
Park while her husband
served in the Navy during
WWII, and then moved to
their home on South Hill
near Washington School
(now torn down). Mr.
Guenthner passed away
in Minot on November 12,
1982.
She was active in St.
Leo’s Church and school.
She was president of St.
Leo’s PTA in 1953 and
1954, secretary of St. Leo’s
Confraternity and a Girl
Scout leader. She loved to
travel. Her hobbies in-
cluded sewing, knitting
and gardening. She was
an accomplished bridge
player.
She is survived by her
daughters Janice
Guenthner of Caldwell,
Idaho and Jean Anderson
of Weston, Wisconsin; her
sons Bill (Cindy) of Hock-
essin, Delaware and John
(Peggy) of Lynchburg, Vir-
ginia; thirteen grandchil-
dren, twenty-nine great-
grandchildren and four
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in
death by her parents, her
husband Herb, brother
James Peake, and sisters
Jean Bostow Bryant,
Kathryn Bogenrief, and
Rose Margaret Johnson,
and son-in-law Rodney
Anderson. Her son Dewey
passed away in 2010.
A memorial service will
be held at a later date.
Burial will be in Rosehill
Cemetery in Minot, North
Dakota.
