Opal Geneva Westgard,
97, of Plaza, ND passed
away on January 17, 2018
in Houston, TX surround
ed by family.
She was born to Helen
and Ole Lyslo on a farm
southeast of Plaza, ND on
September 12, 1920. Her
family moved to Wabek
where she attended grade
school. After graduating
from Plaza High School,
she worked and went to
beauty school in Minot. In
November of 1944 she
was treated at Mayo Clin-
ic for Guillain-Barre,
which is a nerve disease
that left her paralyzed for
nine months. After she
recovered she opened her
own beauty shop, The
Opalic, and ran it from
1946-1949. She married
Ozzie in October of 1948
and they started a family.
They filled their home
with love and laughter.
She always put family
first, from taking home
cooked meals out to the
farmers for lunch, plan-
ning road trips, camping,
organizing games, and en-
joying summers at their
cabin on Lake Metigoshe.
It was a lot of work, but
she relished in it and al-
ways loved spending time
with family and friends.
She was active in the La-
dies Aide and Auxiliary.
Preceded in death by:
her husband, Ozzie;
parents, Ole and Helen
Lyslo; brother, Elwood.
Survived by: her sister,
Viola Carrier; children,
Kyann (Joel) Schneider,
Jan (Fidel) Rodriguez, Joy
(Ronnie) Coote, and Clint
(Linda) Westgard; her
grandchildren, Andrea
Hendricks, Sara Welder,
Brice Schneider, Vanessa
Rincon, Garrett Rodri-
guez, Josie and Archie
Coote, Sam and Leo West-
gard; great-grandchildren,
Allie and Jonah Welder,
Olivia and Lucas Rincon.
Funeral Service: Satur-
day, February 3, at 1:00
p.m., at First Lutheran
Church in Plaza.
Burial: Saturday,
February 3, at 4:00 p.m.,
at Rosehill Memorial Park
in Minot.
