Richard Allan Arndt,
74, of Stanley, died Sa-
turday, June 17, 2017, in a
Minot hospital. His fun-
eral service will be Fri-
day, June 23, 2017, at 11
a.m. at Our Savior’s Free
Lutheran Church, Stanley.
Burial is at Fairview
Cemetery, Stanley. Visita-
tion is Thursday, June 22
from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at
Springan Funeral Home,
Stanley.
Richard was born on
August 24, 1942, on the
family farm in Brookbank
Township, Mountrail
County, North Dakota, to
Carl and Marie (Blum)
Arndt. He was the sixth
sibling of ten. He attended
the country school
Springdale School #2 for
eight years, and then at-
tended Stanley High
School. While in high
school, he played a guard
and lineman in football.
He received the Outstand-ing Lineman award as a
senior. He graduated from
Stanley High School in
1962.
He served in the United
States Navy from 1964 to
1968. While in the Navy,
he was stationed in Nor-
folk, Va. He was a BT3
(Boiler Tender 3rd class)
on the USS DuPont (DD
941). He served on three
Mediterranean cruises
and saw twenty four
countries, including
Rome, Italy; Monte Carlo,
Monaco; Turkey, and
Nice, France. He also saw
fighting in Vietnam the
last six months that he
was in the Navy. While in
the gulf of Vietnam, the
DuPont was struck by
gunfire. He was honorably
discharged from the Navy
on January 10, 1968.
He returned to Stanley
after being discharged
from the Navy where he
worked on the family
farm and raised cattle. He
farmed with his dad until
his dad’s death. He then
purchased and took over
the family farm. He was a
full time grain farmer and
rancher. He also worked
at Solberg Implement
Case dealership in Stanley
in the winter months.
He married Karen Holm
on November 19, 1982, in
Stanley. They had two
daughters, Athenais and
Alexandra, who they
raised on the family farm
south of Stanley. He con-
tinued farming until 1997
when he sold the land
and started working for
Marshall Craft Farms. He
continued working for
Marshall for seventeen
years. He fully retired in
2011.
He became a grandfa-
ther for the first time on
December 1, 2007, to Jay-
den Foss. He loved watch-
ing Jayden play tackle
football and wrestle in pee
wee wrestling for Velva.
His grandchildren were
his pride and joy and
loved attending their ac-
tivities. His other hobbies
included playing softball
for the Belden Bombers,
collecting belt buckles
and model antique cars,
and always looked for-
ward to deer hunting sea-
son. He was an avid foot-
ball and baseball fan,
especially the Minnesota
Vikings and Minnesota
Twins. One of his
highlights was attending
his first Minnesota Vik-
ings football game in
2009, and Minnesota
Twins game in 2012. He
was a member of Our
Savior’s Free Lutheran
Church in Stanley; Ameri-
can Legion Post 134 for 42
years; and the Byron Kul-
land chapter of the Viet-
nam Veterans.

years, Karen; daughter
Athenais Padgett of Minot
(fiance Matt Detillier),
daughter Alexandra (Dus-
tin) Klimpel of Velva;
grandson Jayden Foss of
Velva, granddaughters
Brinley Padgett of Minot,
Kaymee Klimpel and Car-
ly Klimpel of Velva; and
one granddaughter due in
October; brother-in-law
Bud Mahnke of Benedict,
ND; nieces Angela Canovi
of Kansas City, Mo., and
Rebecca (Mike) Evans of
Kansas City, Mo.; nephew
Chris Mahnke of Kansas
City, Mo.; numerous
cousins; and longtime
friends Marshall Craft and
Jim Enge, both of Stanley.
He was preceded in
death by his parents, Carl
and Marie Arndt;
father-in-law, Oscar
Holm; mother-in-law,
Martha Holm; and
sister-in-law, Bonnie Mah-
nke.
