Geraldine (Gerri) Ann

(Carkuff) Flaharty, passed

away peacefully on July

19, 2016, in Des Moines,

IA, with her family by her

side. Her funeral service

will be Tuesday, July 26,

2016 at 10:30 a.m. in Our

Savior’s Free Lutheran

Church, Stanley, ND.

There will be a private

family visitation but

friends may sign the

memorial register Monday

from 10-5 at Springan

Funeral Home in Stanley.

Burial will be in Fairview

Cemetery, Stanley.

Gerri was born on

March 15, 1948, to James

and Virginia Carkuff in

Stanley, ND. She went to

the Carkuff School in the

country until sixth grade.

She then transferred to

Stanley and graduated

from high school in 1966.

Gerri attended Minot

State University and

Minot Business College.

She lived and worked

in Bismarck and in 1981

she met the love of her

life, Robert Flaharty.

Robert and Gerri were

married on May 21, 1982.

They made their home in

Escondido, CA. Gerri had

an income tax/accounting

business for many years.

Robert passed away in

January of 1994.

Gerri graduated with

honors from San Marcos

State University in 1996

with a double major in

Political Science and His-

tory.

In 2000, she moved to

Des Moines, IA, the

hotbed of grass roots poli-

tics and a big swing state.

For over ten years, Gerri

actively worked on many

campaigns. During her

work she met Secretary of

State John Kerry, Gover-

nor Bill Richardson, John

and Elizabeth Edwards,

Vice President Joe Biden,

Howard Dean, Christo-

pher Dodd and her favor-

ite, Senator Ted Kennedy.

She also got to work

alongside Jon Bon Jovi,

Sting and Gene Simmons,

as they came to lend their

support to campaign staff.

Gerri was very active in

her church and participat-ed in Bible Study. She

was a member of Toast-

masters for many years.

Gerri was always in-

terested in her nieces’ and

nephews’ education. She

wanted to know about

their report cards, how

Spanish was going for

them, and what they were

doing academically dur-

ing the summer. She also

loved hearing her nieces

and nephews playing pi-

ano for her.

She will lovingly be

remembered as a very

bright, kind and generous

wife, daughter, sister,

niece and friend.

Gerri is survived by her

sisters, Joy (Nick) Krush,

Mandan, ND and Valerie

(Jeff) Lommen,

Rosemount, MN; nieces

and nephews, James

(RaeAnn) Carkuff, Jeremy

(Sarah) Carkuff, Zachary

Krush, Katarina Krush,

Madeline Lommen and

Lucas Lommen;

great-nieces, Isabelle and

Lillian Carkuff and Sadie

Carkuff. She is also sur-

vived by her sister-in-law,

Mercy Carkuff and aunt,

Vanda Godijohn.

She was preceded in

death by her husband,

Robert; brother, Greg; and

her parents, James and

Virginia.

Memorials may be

given to Our Savior’s Free

Lutheran Church or to the

donor’s choice.
