Dorothy Theobald
Dot Theobald, 75,
Minot, passed away
peacefully on March 9th
after a courageous and
short battle with Acute
Myeloid Leukemia.
Dot was born on Janu-
ary 25, 1941, in Mattoon
Il. She was the third of
seven children born to
John and Loretta (Stuck-
ey) Protz. Dot graduated
from Mattoon High
School in 1959. She was
once married to Phil
Theobald whom she had
met shortly after graduat-
ing from high school.
From this union two chil-
dren were born, Dawn
and John. After a few
stops around the country
they settled in Minot, ND
in 1969 where she later
became a contracting off-
icer at the Minot Air
Force Base. Several years
later she helped Kalix, for-
mally known as Minot Vo-
cational Workshop, re-
ceive the Nisch contract
on the Base. This contract
allowed individuals with
disabilities the opportuni-ty to gain employment in
the civilian areas of the
Air Base. This is where
she found her true pas-
sion in life and left her
government job for a posi-
tion at Kalix. While there
she decided to go to col-
lege and at the age of 50
received her bachelor’s
degree in social work. A
short time later she ac-
cepted a position as Assis-
tant Director of the 2nd
Story Club where she
remained until the time of
her death. When asked
one day how much she
was making at the Second
Story after leaving a lucra-
tive career for the govern-ment and going back to
college she stated, “It
doesn’t matter how much
money you make when
you love what you’re do-
ing”. Dot truly loved her
family at the Second Story
Club and was one of the
few blessed people in life
to have found her calling.
Dot was a solid rock to
her daughter Dawn whom
she shared similar chal-
lenges with in life. The
two developed a bond that
we all wish to achieve
with someone. She sup-
ported her son John and
all his radical choices he
made. The love and care
she had for her grandchil-dren was second to none.
Her life was her family.
Dot was a very indepen-
dent and caring woman
that if provoked had the
fighting attitude of a rabid
badger. She lived a simple
and unmaterialistic life
and relied on simple
things to bring her joy. If
she wasn’t spending time
with her family at the
Second Story she could
be found in her garden,
watching HGTV or Nas-
car. She loved her daily
trips to Arrowhead gro-
cery store where she
would scold the cashier
that had sold her losing
lottery tickets the day be-
fore, all in good fun of
course. Everyone knows
she only played the lot-
tery so she could give the
money to the Club had
she ever won. During Nas-
car season she would lock
down the house and re-
fuse to leave or do any-
thing until the conclusion
of the race. We are all
pretty sure she has al-
ready tracked down old
number 3, Dale Earnhardt,
and gave him a tongue
lashing or two about the
races he should have won.
Dot enjoyed telling
stories of her younger
days, bragging about her
times of being a Merle
Norman cosmetic model
long before anyone knew
who Merle Norman was.
She told stories of her
times as a backup singer
for several country music
artist many of whom
played daily on the radio
at the time. Dot always
told her grandchildren to
never stop chasing their
dreams, some may get
away from time to time
but some day you will
catch your true dream in
life. In her final days she
was asked if she could
have anything in the
world right now what
would it be. She stated
without hesitation,
“peace, love and harmony
for everyone”. Dot will be
missed dearly by every-
one she has touched in
her life and will leave a
void that will never be
filled.
