Dr. Linda Horne

July 27, 1942-Jan. 29, 2015

Linda Horne, a resident of Manhattan Beach, Calif., passed away at Gardena Memorial Hospital, in Gardena, Calif., on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2015, following a brief illness.

Linda, the youngest daughter of Ervin and Leila Horne, was born in Stanley on July 27, 1942. She was 72 years of age at the time of her death. As a child she lived on the family farm near Ross and attended public schools in North Dakota and Arizona. She attended Minot State College, in Minot, and graduated with a B.S. in elementary education. In 1964 Linda left the prairies of North Dakota for southern California and took a position teaching elementary school in the Fontana schools. She then started with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District in 1966. She continued to teach young people, specializing in second and third grade, for the next 39 years until retiring from Lunada Bay Elementary in June 2005. A beloved teacher of district elementary students, Linda introduced several new computer projects and a computer lab to Lunada Bay Elementary. Parents and family members were often surprised and pleased to find their second graders writing project reports on a computer, making them early users of technology. She continued to pursue additional training and education and completed a M.S. in education from the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, and an Ed.D. in curriculum and instruction from the University of Colorado, Boulder, Colo.

Linda’s teaching schedule afforded her the opportunity to work in other areas over the years. She enjoyed brief tenures working for IBM as a systems analyst, for Texas Instruments as a software trainer, for the University of Colorado as an instructor, and Northrop Corporation as a senior software trainer. Following her retirement Linda gave others the benefit of her years of teaching experience by supervising student teachers for Loyola Marymount University.

Linda was a kind and gentle person whose sweet spirit will be missed by her entire family.

She is survived by: her sister, Sharon (G.E. “Ed”) Woodmansee, in Mississippi, and their families; and by brother, Kent (Janice) Horne, in Arizona and their families.

Interment of her ashes will be: in the summer at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot.
