Kasimir ‘Kasy’ Schmaltz

Kasimir “Kasy” Schmaltz, 89, Bismarck, formerly of Anamoose, passed away peacefully Sunday, Dec. 14, 2014, at St. Vincent’s Care Center in Bismarck.
Kasimir was a loving and devoted husband and father, and a trusted friend who generously served his community, his state and his country.
Kasimir was born May 5, 1925, to John and Mary (Leier) Schmaltz in Orrin. He attended school in Anamoose and graduated in 1943. After high school, he enlisted in the Navy and was trained at the Amphibious Training Base in Little Creek, Va. After completing training, he was assigned to the LSM 256 Asiatic Pacific and helped in transporting troops and equipment during World War II. After being honorably discharged, he received training in auto mechanics and started a career in the auto industry. He worked for different dealerships in Cando, Minot, Drake and Harvey. He married Ruth Ewert Sept. 19, 1949. They had four children: Victoria, Gail, Bruce and Brent.
He was an active member in the VFW Post 6081 in Anamoose, serving on various committees and had held state offices including State Commander in 1995-1996 and Military Order of the Cootie of the U.S. In addition, Kasy served on the Anamoose City Council, School Board and Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed fishing on a regular basis with his friend Pete, cooking, woodworking, gardening and collecting coins and stamps. On many Monday nights, he was the bingo caller at the VFW Post in Anamoose.
He is survived by: his wife of 65 years, Ruth Schmaltz, of Bismarck; his daughters, Victoria (Dick Hallberg), of Wisconsin, and Gail Osburn of Bismarck; sons, Bruce (Pauline Rosberg) Schmaltz of Bismarck and Brent (Rhonda Fullerton) Schmaltz of Wisconsin. In addition, he is also survived by his grandchildren, Christopher (Jean) Hallberg, Michael Hallberg, Keith (June) Osburn, Sister Mary Gianna (Jessica) Schmaltz, of Missionaries of Charity, Jordan (Dawn) Schmaltz, Jennifer Schmaltz and Caleb Beckstrom; eight great-grandchildren, one sister-in-law, Marcela of Bismarck and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by: his parents, John and Mary; three brothers, John, Tony and Francis; one infant sister; one grandchild, Sara Hallberg; two sisters-in-law, Fern and Rachel; and many other relatives.
The family wishes to thank Ruth for her daily loving and consistent care of Kasy during his 3 1/2 years as a resident of St. Vincent’s Nursing Home. Our family will miss the calm steady presence of this member of the “greatest generation.”
Mass of Christian Burial will be: 10:30 a.m. today, Saturday, Dec. 20, at the Church of Saint Anne, Bismarck, with Rev. Wayne Sattler officiating.
Burial will be held: 10 a.m. Monday at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, south of Mandan.
Visitation will be held: one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.
Memorials: may be given to the North Dakota Veterans Home or the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery.
